I bought a used car but you have to be very, very, careful. I always take any used car I am thinking of buying. I was looking at Hyundai Elantras and was aware of some of the flaws to expect and look for from I always take any used car I am thinking of buying. I was looking at Hyundai Elantras and was aware of some of the flaws to expect and look for from car reviews-no car is perfect. The first one I drove I realized when I took a closer look at it that there were thousands of very tiny white specks on one side of the car. I decided to take it to a paint shop before seeing my mechanic and they said it would be $3,000 to repaint but it would never be as good as the original surface. They warned me that it would end up being tiny growing rust spots. Their best guess was that resembles parking near a train line where tiny specks of gravel are repeatedly spewed out as the train passed. The next one I test drove I took to my mechanic for a check-up. While I was sitting in the waiting room I later overheard some whooping and hollering and a shout of something like 'Come here, you gotta see this, you won't believe it!" Later they drove it out of the bay and to the front door. I could hear a terrible screeching through the wall and door as the car approached. The mechanic asked me 'Didn't you hear that screeching noise'. I am not a particularly observant person to car sounds but outside the car it was very apparent. They told me that any decent mechanic could tell just from the sound it was probably a belt problem. When they opened it up, there was a horrible belt that was very cracked (they showed it to me). They felt it was dangerous to drive with that so they had changed it and thought that would fix the problem. It hadn't. Then they decided that it must be the belt for the drive chain (I think that was it) which is hidden and you had to take off the belt they had already changed to access the drive chain. So they had gone back inside and took a look at the drive train belt. That was apparently when the whooping and hollering had occurred. That area had been reassembled incorrectly-they could tell just by looking. They said they wouldn't have thought it was even possible to have the car operate on the road that way. My mechanic also told me he was shocked, even a reasonably experienced car salesman should have known there was a serious problem with the car just by moving it from the lot to the customer. I had them also check a common problem related to the balance (or something similar) of the tires-if the numbers are beyond a certain range you will wear your tires unevenly and have poorer traction and have to buy new more often. My mechanic thought they should have that procedure done. I took the car and the pictures of the drive train to Hyundai and they said they would pay for that. When I said they needed to talk to their mechanics, they said it had been done by another dealer. They didn't think the tires needed balancing by their measurements but later when I checked the records, it looked to me like there had been 2 sets of new tires in a relatively short time so I had my mechanics do that chore. What really gives this dealership 2 stars is 1) The used car tag for the first car said the paint was in good shape, 2) the used car tag for my car said the belts were in good shape-even I would have spotted that bad belt and that is really making a statement because of my low car skills, and especially 3) The salesman drives the cars right next to the reception desk-the same people that told me it wasn't their mechanics-it was another dealer. That is also the area they washed the car before I test drove it. You had an experienced salesman and the person working the desk who all would have heard the horrible screeching that was really loud outside the car and recognizable inside if you are experienced (driving back to the dealer I realized how oblivious I had been. Yet no person at the dealership chose to investigate a serious problem. More
They are kind and polite. Unfortunately they didn't fix the noise my trunk is making. This is the third time I've brought it in to them for the same reason. Not happy they didn't fix it again. They said my the noise my trunk is making. This is the third time I've brought it in to them for the same reason. Not happy they didn't fix it again. They said my tire pressure was too high. They realized no one checked the pressure in them 2 weeks ago when I brought it in for an oil change. More
Everything worked out well except I’m still waiting for my $250 coupon to use for maintenance and service.
