I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Ron Tonkin. Just 3 days after purchasing my vehicle, it started overheating. I immediately took it back and was told they would fix the problem. Unfortunately, what I thought was a repair turned out to only be a temporary fix. About a week after getting the vehicle back, it started overheating again. I returned it and was told, “Good news, it’s not the head gasket,” and that the vehicle just needed to be “burped.” About a week later, it overheated AGAIN. At that point, I took it to a different repair shop. They burped the cooling system as well but told me they suspected the head gasket. The vehicle continued to overheat, and after taking it back to that shop, I was told the head gasket was most likely the issue all along. What is especially frustrating is that when I later told Ron Tonkin that another mechanic believed it was the head gasket, I was told that was something they had been worried about. Now, only about 3 months after purchasing this vehicle for approximately $12,000 CASH, I am facing around $4,000 in additional repairs. I went back to Ron Tonkin hoping they would at least be willing to meet me somewhere in the middle or help resolve the situation. Instead, Jeff Shutt told me that I purchased the vehicle “as is” and they would not assist with the repair. I was told they could offer me trade-in value, which would be roughly HALF of what I paid just a few months ago. I understand what “as is” means. What I am disappointed about is that the overheating began only DAYS after the purchase, I repeatedly brought the vehicle back because of the SAME problem, and I relied on their service department when I was told the head gasket was not the issue. Had the underlying problem been properly diagnosed from the beginning, I could have made different decisions instead of continuing to drive a vehicle that repeatedly overheated. I am extremely disappointed with how Jeff Shutt and Ron Tonkin have handled this situation. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend having any used vehicle independently inspected by a mechanic who is NOT affiliated with the dealership before purchasing it. I also recommend getting every diagnosis and repair recommendation in writing. I paid $12,000 cash for a vehicle, and three months later I am being told my options are to spend approximately another $4,000 repairing it or trade it back for roughly half of what I just paid. That is incredibly disappointing. More
