I was a buyer with preapproved financing through my own lender and was ready to purchase a Certified Pre-Owned Mazda. The dealership's communication was inconsistent throughout the process. Initially, I lender and was ready to purchase a Certified Pre-Owned Mazda. The dealership's communication was inconsistent throughout the process. Initially, I was told I needed to complete a full credit application and authorize a hard Experian inquiry. Later, the explanation changed to a "5-liner" for an OFAC check by Aaron. Then flipped back to full hard pull by Alex. When I asked simple questions about whether a hard credit inquiry would actually be performed and exactly how my information would be used, I could not get a clear answer. Because I would have had to purchase airfare, arrange transportation, and take time away from work and my family, I asked the dealership to provide a signed Buyer's Order and a signed document showing the agreed out-the-door price and all purchase requirements before I traveled. The dealership refused to provide any signed documentation. Instead of answering my written request, they had Sager call me after I blocked his number and opt'd out of any messaging from him. They also refused to clearly document whether a hard credit inquiry would occur or exactly what information was required before I made the trip. They said it for an OFAC check, but an OFAC check isn't the same as a full credit application. To better understand the situation, I contacted both my lender (Navy Federal) and TrueCar, since this was a TrueCar lead. Navy Federal confirmed that a full credit pull was unnecessary given my preapproval that the Dealer was steering me to their own financing and this is something they see often. TrueCar also informed me that only certain qualified personnel are authorized to handle TrueCar leads and no one they mentioned outside the General Manager are qualified to work with True Car leads and that requiring full credit applications and hard pulls in this context is against their policy. Despite this, the dealership continued to insist on a full credit application without providing clear justification since that goes well beyond OFAC check. To make the process easier and reduce any perceived risk on their end, I offered alternatives including soft credit pulls, lender verification through Navy Federal, references to other dealerships I had worked with, and a letter from my employer (the U.S. Army). Despite these efforts, they still declined to provide the requested documentation. I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable. I simply wanted the agreed price and purchase requirements documented in writing before spending hundreds of dollars traveling to the dealer. As a result, I lost confidence that the terms discussed would still be the terms offered when I arrived. I chose not to proceed with the purchase and bought elsewhere. If you're a potential buyer, I recommend getting every requirement and every term documented in writing before making travel arrangements. More
