As a automotive repair shop owner and ASE certified mechanic for the past 18 years, it was hard for me to have to take my wife's mercedez to another shop for repairs. We have a warranty on the car but mechanic for the past 18 years, it was hard for me to have to take my wife's mercedez to another shop for repairs. We have a warranty on the car but we can't use our own business as the repair facility so we are stuck taking it elsewhere. Before I brought the vehicle to Mercedez in salt lake, I did my own diagnostic on the two issues I wanted looked at wich were clicking noise when turning left or right (cv axles or suspension component) and a random timing chain rattle on start up with a stored fault code ( p0016 intake camshaft issue) my short diagnostic and research told me that this is a common issue with some mercedez motors and the culprit is the cam adjuster or tone wheel on the camshaft has moved. Both are very labor intensive repairs but crutial to the engine. If fhe timing chain skips and gets too far out of sync, the valves and pistons will collide and the engine will be destroyed. We made an appointment with MB and dropped it off Friday at 2:45. When we waked in we were waiting in line to speak with the service advisor and overheard two service advisors talking about a customer's vehicle that had been back to the shop 5 times for the same issue. Thay immediately made me a bit hesitant to leave the car there. We were set up with Vivian as our service advisor. She has a dry personality and wasn't friendly at all. She said she would relay my information to the tech and call us when the diagnostic was done. After not hearing anything by the next Wednesday, my wife called to get an update and was told they still haven't looked at it and we were second in line. Later that day Vivian called and said the technician drove the car and didn't hear any clicking noise when driving the car. I said, whell then he didn't drive it because it does it every single time you turn and her response was, oh actually Nevermind I see he says you need front and left cv axle for a cost of $5600. I was surprised of the cost and said OK what about the timing chain rattle and stored engine code. She said there is no check engine light and I said I know there is no check engine light but there is a code stored for camshaft timing wich correlates with the rattle in the timing chain and she said the tech didn't look at it. I told her I am a shop owner and ASE certified mechanic and asked if I could speak to the tech about the information I have with the common issues on that motor and she said no I can not, she will relay any message to the tech. Very rude and over confident with herself. I told her to have her tech look at the stored code in the computer and do a diagnostic on it. She called back 30 minutes later and said the tech scanned the computer and seen the stored code. He check the camshaft adjuster (pressed a few buttons on his scanner) and the adjuster test good so there is nothing wrong and to bring it back when the check engine light comes on. Just to inform anyone reading this. If there is an audible issue (rattle) in the timing chain area of the motor and a stored code that relates to the timing components and known documented issues of certain timing components. That is something you want to fix asap and save the motor from catastrophic failure. Not something you just want to drive and wait to see what happens. The outcome of skipped timing chain will be catastrophic. With the timing chain noise, stored fault code, and documented issues with timing components, I as a shop owner would have warranted a repair to fix the issue before it becomes a more costly and inconvenient problem. They don't listen to their customers and their concerns. The mechanics must be inexperienced and or lazy. They are highly over priced and the customer service needs attention. If you have to bring your vehicle to MB of salt lake I hope you don't have to deal with Vivian and I hope they listen to your concerns and address them so that you don't have to take your vehicle back multiple times. Vivian was so helpful and communicated to me during the whole process which was imperative in my situation where the service on my car did not go as planned. Had she not been so helpful and willing to be o whole process which was imperative in my situation where the service on my car did not go as planned. Had she not been so helpful and willing to be open and honest with me, I probably would have not brought my car back for service here, but she made it worth while. More
