I purchased a used 2021 Toyota Highlander on 11/21 and was issued a temporary New Jersey registration. I also signed a Power of Attorn
dealership.
I purchased a used 2021 Toyota Highlander on 11/21 and was issued a temporary New Jersey registration. I also signed a Power of Attorney authorizing the dealer to file my New York registration. As the temporary tag approached expiration, I repeatedly requested updates, but received little to no meaningful communication.
Only after significant follow-up did the dealership disclose that there are issues with the vehicle’s title and that they do not currently have it. As a result, they have been unable to file my NY registration. This information was not disclosed at the time of sale.
Even more concerning, instead of providing a lawful solution (such as a loaner vehicle or valid temporary operating authority), the dealership gave me a letter instructing me to show it to police if stopped while driving with an expired registration. This letter has no legal standing and puts the customer at risk of citation, towing, or impoundment.
At this point, I am unable to legally operate a vehicle that I fully paid for, due entirely to dealer-side title issues. Communication has been slow, vague, and reactive rather than transparent and proactive.
I would strongly caution potential buyers to confirm that the dealer has clear title in hand and can complete registration promptly before taking delivery. This has been a stressful and unacceptable experience.

Jay, I have already contacted the dealership multiple times and visited in person. To date, no written explanation of the title issue, no registration filing, and no lawful interim solution (loaner or temporary authorization) has been provided.
I am willing to resolve this promptly, but it must be addressed in writing with clear facts and a concrete solution. I look forward to your written response.

Jay, your public response appears to be nothing more than a canned PR statement. I emailed you immediately after you posted this, and a day later there has been no response at all.
At this point, the pattern is clear: the dealership is willing to publicly “express concern,” but unwilling to provide any written explanation, accountability, or solution privately.
To date, DCH Montclair Acura has:
-Delivered a vehicle it could not legally title or register
-Failed to disclose a title problem at the time of sale
-Refused to explain the title issue in writing
-Suggested I continue driving with expired registration using a dealer letter, which offers no legal protection
-Refused to provide a loaner or any lawful interim solution
Asking a customer to “reach out” publicly and then ignoring them privately is not customer service — it is damage control. If the dealership truly intended to resolve this, it would do so in writing, with transparency and a concrete plan. That has not happened.
I am proceeding through formal regulatory channels. This response is for the benefit of future customers.
