Countryside Motors, Conway, Arkansas sells truck - tops $5300 expense
UPD 5/2/25
The repairs for our 2010 Ford F150 with a P0741 error code etc, later a P1867 are: Worn TM repair, 4X4 repair + Alternator etc, Auto transmission (TM) flush & Shudder Fix; Total: $5334.26
A latent P1867 error code displayed a CHECK 4X4 the first time the 4X4 was used (Jun ‘24) post purchase (Jun ‘23). I still get the CHECK 4X4.
I had CSM do a TM flush.
50 miles from CSM the TM shifted annoyingly harsh, also on day 1 of a 300 mile trip, and more acutely day 2. (1)
Slow leak left a 2' TM fluid spot on cardboard (2a) - in 7/28/23 email to CSM.
A retired Ford Service manager said reusing the transmission pan gasket after the TM flush probably caused the leak (2b).
Access to the TM sealed dipstick on top of the TM requires a lift. Within 400 mi, Shop A found the dipstick in two pieces, blocking service. The cap, held by friction, slipped off w/o tools. (3) They noted the P0741 & P1867 (in 8/3/23 CSM email).
(A) “A P0741 DTC in itself is very serious and should be addressed as soon as possible and handled with adequate repairs.” (Kelly Blue Book).
(B) “A P0741 code is typically triggered by a faulty torque converter, but it can also be caused by a worn TCC valve, or internal transmission failure, among other issues.” (Richard McCuistian, ASE Certified Master Automobile Technician).
(B) “A P0741 code is typically triggered by a faulty torque converter, or other issues.” (Richard McCuistian, ASE Certified Master Automobile Technician).
Shop B: They were the first to work on the F150. With a P0741, and if the torque converter (TC) clutch is damaged, it will need another TC. I had Shop B replace the worn TC, other worn TM clutches etc. (A,B,4,5)
I had a "CHECK 4X4" on my first use (Jun ‘24) of the 4X4. (6) My code tester cleared the associated P1867.
Shop A repaired the alternator system, replaced the battery, and (8/27/24) replaced the 4X4 transfer case motor.
When using the 4X4, it occasionally (last: 4/18/25) displays a “CHECK 4X4 and sets a P1867.”
I sent CSM two letters requesting that we discuss equitable repair cost-sharing. All I received was a phone call on 8/28/23.
The caller declared (I paraphrase) the vehicle left there in good condition. He claimed another TC wasn’t needed. (A,B,4,5)
Two severe problems ( P0741 & P1867), rule out "in good condition".”
He made a monetary offer which I did not consider to be *equitable*. (7)
*Analysis*
Metaphorically, this project is somewhat reminiscent of paddling the 3/4 mile up river on the family farm back when. It was one beaver dam after another.
1) Shop B: The 3 various harsh shifting times were probably due to “low oil.” The last time caused us to abort our trip early.
2a, b) Ref Google: The pressure inside a 2010 F150 TM increases when it’s hot.
The thinner heated fluid and increased pressure due to the sealed dipstick probably caused a delayed TM leak (20+ Mi), via the gasket.
3) CSM replaced metal hex dip stick cap post-flush with a wrench. Readers can judge why the cap yielded at the (per my photo) thin threaded area.
4) Shop B et al: A P0741 with a damaged TC is fatal.
5) I had Shop B repair the TM as I feared CSM might use Shudder Fix again, which only lasts hundreds of miles, instead of performing "adequate repairs." The claim that another TC wasn’t needed, heightened my concerns regarding the repair plan.
6) The first P1867 (8/3/23 email) had to occur at CSM pre-delivery as the 4X4 was not used before Shop A reported it. Once cleared by Shop B, the next return occurred on selecting a 4X4 (Jun ‘24).
7) The caller’s offer is not likely to come close to anyone accepting it as “ *equitable* cost-sharing,” however, you might accept it if you were on the precipice of financial ruin.
