They do all the worst things you've ever heard about car salesman except since they do this every day, they have refined the art of screwing you over so well that, even if you are prepared, even if you KNOW the tricks, you will still end up falling for their bullsh*t.
Of course every salesman at Corwin was PERFECTLY polite and amiable. Friendly to the max. They all pretend like they are your best friend, out for YOUR interests (lol.) I mostly worked with Devin who was nice enough but didn't ever tell me any actual useful information and who mysteriously had other customers at our agreed-upon time. So I worked with Luis (nice bait and switch) who kindly stacked on random fees, treated his inflated offer like it was final and gave my request for some wiggle room the slightest nod. "We're charging you 7% above MSRP for no reason, but oh, since you asked, and we CARE about you as a customer, I guess I'll 'go check with my manager' and sorry, can only knock $250 off." If you want a popular car, there's nothing you can do (except not buy the car.) So you have to sit and take the financial beating.
And just when you think the humiliation is over, they put you in ANOTHER room with ANOTHER salesman (military dude Jason B) who is all like "I'm not going to sell you things you don't need, I'm just a regular guy." And I think I spent like 30 minutes saying "no", but he just kept at it (I was already SUPER late for a dinner date, so I recommend never having plans to do anything after but cry in your new car the day you decide to buy -- of course, was asked to come in same day, so not like I could plan for it. The process WILL take 4-6 hours for no good reason. I was waiting over an hour in between salesmen. Probably because everyone has to say "no" a hundred times so the line backs up.) But I was so exhausted and worn down and needed to get on with my night, that I let him talk me into something I could barely afford (and didn't notice until too late that there was something else on the list that I hadn't asked for-and definitely didn't want-that apparently Luis mentioned in passing) and now I'm just beating myself up over it. I will pay for those mistakes every month for the next several years.
I can curse Corwin all I want but they don't care. If you want a Toyota, you have no choice. They will take advantage of you because they can. Most companies have upped their decency game, but Corwin uses the same slimy tactics. Going in prepared will only help a little. I recommend giving yourself some time to heal from the emotional wounds and helplessness after dealing with them. Luis, you are a master salesman, congratulations on your fine skills at manipulating people. I love that you started the conversation by saying "I'm new at this."
I did leave with the car that I wanted, so there's that?

So, amazingly, someone reached out to me (I didn't even have to call) named Rafael. But, though he was polite enough, he didn't help at all.
I asked for the xx stuff (extended warranty I didn't want and the theft-deterrent I didn't want) to be removed since I was strong-armed, fast-talked, and worn-down after multiple times saying "no" into accepting them. First Rafael said I'd have to call the warranty company (HAHAHAHAHA, if there's anyone more corrupt than dealerships, it's insurance and warranty companies.) Then when I accepted that Corwin simply screwed me, he suddenly offered up a cancellation form. I'll believe it when I see it.
And he convinced me that I had no choice about the theft-deterrent. Which I discovered is not true. I was never shown the hard-copy of the document that said that (though I now have the soft copy. Wow, reading through the docs they give you - literally on a flash drive at the last second before you drive off - is FASCINATING.)
Looking at the paperwork, it's amazing how much I was misled.
Here's the breakdown of what I paid above MSRP ($39000):
- $5100 finance charge that was never, ever mentioned
- $2800 for no reason (they even admitted that, straight up)
- $2400 for a warranty I didn't want (oh, look, I'm on the "highest level of coverage" for something I didn't want LOL)
- $600 document/delivery fee
- $500 for the theft-deterrent that I did have a choice about, after all
Oh, but to be fair, I got a full tank of gas.
Just bought new Rav4 from Corwin Toyota and Devin is the
