In its entire history, BMW M has designed only two cars from a blank sheet. The first was the M1. This is the other one.
Why We Acquired This Vehicle
M's usual job is to take a BMW that already exists and sharpen it. Twice in fifty years it has started from nothing instead: the M1 in the late 1970s, and this. The XM is the first standalone M model since that car, the first electrified one, and at its launch the most powerful vehicle the division had ever built - 644 horsepower and 590 lb-ft from a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 working with an electric motor mounted between the engine and the gearbox.
What makes it genuinely unusual is not the output. It is that the same vehicle will cover roughly thirty miles without waking the V8 at all, then reach 60 mph in 4.1 seconds when asked. Very few cars ask so little of an owner on a Tuesday and give back so much on a Saturday.
