From a guy who hates buying cars Let me start by saying I'm not a car guy. I HATE buying cars. If it were up to me, we'd probably all be riding horses or something. So when time ca Let me start by saying I'm not a car guy. I HATE buying cars. If it were up to me, we'd probably all be riding horses or something. So when time came to buy a car, my wife and I did some research. Consumer Reports narrowed our search down to the Subaru Forester, the Toyota Rav4, and the Honda-CRV. We test drove all three, and liked them all, but after visiting dealers for all three brands, we ended up settling on the Rav4 (old body style). I put my contact info on one of the car websites and got deluged with contacts from many different dealers. Everyone was very friendly, but the contact was CONSTANT. The best solution I found was to get the word out about what specifically we were looking for. I finally started to reply to all the emails with a list: The model and year, the miles, and the specific colors we didn't want. After a couple of weeks of looking, checking CarGurus and other sites, as well as checking VIN histories, we ended up hearing from one of the General Managers at Balise about a car that hadn't made it onto their website yet. He sent the carfax and I did some other VIN checks just to double check. My wife went in that day on her way home from work, test drove and liked it. I went in the next day and test drove it, and my wife had her dad go in the following day to test drive (Dad's approval was important!). While we didn't take advantage of it, they were willing to bring the car out to us if we couldn't come in. Everyone at Balise was very nice. The salesman we dealt with was Farouk. He was consistantly very charming, cordial and friendly, and a pleasure to talk to. He never rushed us or seemed impatient, and was never pushy in the least. Also no pressure, which was CRUCIAL to the sale. If we got the hard sell we'd have walked right out and never come back. The experience at Balise was much more comfortable, and I credit that to Farouk. The financial guy, Jide, was also very friendly and that experience was as painless as committing to a loan ever could be. In addition to not being a car guy, I'm not an adept negotiator by any stretch. We did get some money off on the car, though the car's price history on cargurus - when it did show up for a day, indicated it could probably have been pushed further, but that's on me for being too laid back. Cons: It took longer to get the title than we'd expected. We'd been told it would be about 7 days, but it took almost two weeks. I don't know why that was, but I can't fault the dealership. THE FOLLOWING IS NOT RELATED TO BALISE SPECIFICALLY: Bear in mind the dealership's job is to get you to buy a car and to make a profit. I have learned from our visits and from everything that I've read and heard from friends, the power to deal lies with the financial guy rather than the salesman - and it makes sense. It's up to YOU to make sure you're well informed. Know the payment you're able to make comfortably, and know the average retail value of the car you're looking at with the miles it's got. Do your research, and don't walk in unless your ready to walk out without a car (and we'd walked out of several dealerships for different reasons). All that said - I would definitely go to Balise again. We got a deal that left meat on the bone for them (I'm not proud of that, but I can live with it), and left us with a payment we can make comfortably. We were very happy with Farouk, and with our car buying experience at Balise. More
