I have worked with several people I’ve known, and from what I remember, its reputation was for hugh volume and aggressive salesmen. In other words, it was known gor having a large inventory, it was known for selling a lot of cars, but the people I talked to felt browbeaten by the sales experience. This was par for the course 10, 20,, 30 years ago on many car lots, new, used, whatever. What a contrast it was when my wife and I met David standing outside the building, smiling and welcoming us to Beaverton Toyota. He opened those big doors wide for us and said he would look for a table where we could sit down and talk. I noticed in lioking around the interior of the room that there were no cars immediately visible. I thought that’s odd for a dealership display area. I was remembering back to when the whole idea was to impress the customer with all the latest models before he even had a chance to dit down and think. David was in no hurry, apparently. He found us a little table with 3 chairs and a monitor and asked how he could help us. Wow! How he could help us. We were impressed by Dave’s manner. He was relaxed but very attentive to us and we knew he wanted to know honestly. We told him we were interested in the Toyota Corolla hybrid I had been reading so much about. So, instead of re-directing us to a model higher up the food chain, like a RAV-4 or even a Camry, David got it in his head that we should find a Corolla hybrid. So far, so great. Unexpected, but welcome. Dave’s manner was quiet and unassuming. We had the feeling that we were being heard, not taken for granted. Anyway Dave found a car that had just arrived and been prepped for the lot. Now it was time to test drive it. I got behind the wheel and it was live at first sight. We were in a sweet hybrid sedan in a ruby red color that felt and loiked fantastic. It was my first time with a hybrid, si I was curious about how it ran. I knew I had zero interest in waiting in a long line for fuel. I was happy to confirm that it self -charged. We pulled out of the lot and we were on our way. My first impression was that this car had more power to it than I expected. It had no difficulty driving on the flat roads around the dealership. David directed us where to go, and I was impressed by the way the car handled. Keep in mind, the car that had been totaled was a Lexus RX 350. I was used to comfort in my ride. But instead of getting a chippy cheap ride from an entry- level vehicle, I found the ride to be very nice, very comfortable. I wasn’t distracted by the front panel at all. This despite the fact that it showed me all rhe information I could ever want to know. And I have to say, the car felt roomy, nit cramped. Very roomy and I am not a small person. I had been wondering about this. My wife in rhe passenger seat was saying similar things about her experience of the car. “Comfortable, roomy, uncluttered.” We doubled back to the dealership, but en route David suggested that Cindy take a little test drive as I had. We pulled over, we switched seats, and Cindy drove. I was now in the back seat, and I noticed that this area wasn’t just big enough for groceries, as some back seats are. No, i was comfortable in my seat and had no trouble with anything. I was able to hear the conversation from the front seat. The music sounded good wherever you were in the car. Another important and imprssive detail about this car. I’m probably boring some readers, but all of my observations are true and honest, according to me. This was a good experience, and it stands in contrast to what I have heard over the years about the sales method at this dealership. I should also say that I have lived in Portland since 1977 , so about 46 years. More
