To CarMax Corporate & Regional Management, I am formally escalating a serious safety and ethics issue involving CarMax after purchasing a $70,000 2021 C8 Corvette from this location. The vehicle was sold with aftermarket tire decals glued directly to the sidewalls. During the 800-mile drive back to New Mexico, those decals began peeling off—taking rubber with them. I removed the decals solely to prevent damage to the paint and body, only to discover clear sidewall damage consistent with buffing and/or adhesive use. This is not a cosmetic issue. Tires are a safety-critical component. I provided photos and documentation. Both Big O Tires and Chevrolet inspected the vehicle and documented that the tires should be replaced due to sidewall damage. Additionally, Michelin will not warranty tires that have been altered, buffed, or exposed to adhesive that can compromise structural integrity. To make matters worse, the decals covered DOT date codes, preventing identification of tire age and manufacturing details—information required for safety verification. Despite all of this, the Henderson store initially claimed: “This meets CarMax standards.” That statement alone is alarming. When the issue was escalated further, Adam, the Reconditioning Manager, contacted me and offered the following response (verbatim): >“You should have stopped at another CarMax store so we could re glue them on.” That comment is beyond unacceptable. Does this manager understand basic tire safety—or manufacturer warranty requirements at all? Re-gluing decals to tire sidewalls would: * Further alter the tire * Further violate Michelin warranty practices * Potentially worsen sidewall integrity * Mask existing damage instead of correcting it The idea that a CarMax employee would suggest intentionally reapplying adhesive to a tire sidewall raises serious concerns about training, safety standards, and reconditioning practices at this location. After that suggestion failed to hold up, the explanation changed again. I was then told the damage was caused by *me removing the decals—decals that should never have been applied to the tires in the first place. So the narrative keeps shifting: * First: “Meets CarMax standards” * Then: “You should have had us re glue them” * Then: “You caused the damage” This is **deflection and blame-shifting**, not customer service. CarMax sold a high-performance vehicle with: * Altered tires * Unknown adhesive methods * Possible sidewall buffing * Obscured DOT identification * Documented professional recommendations for replacement And is now refusing to correct the issue over a set of tires. If this is how CarMax handles a clear, documented safety concern on a $70,000 vehicle, it raises serious questions about what other shortcuts are being taken during “reconditioning.” I am requesting immediate review by regional and corporate management, including: * Why altered tires were approved for sale * Why DOT codes were obscured * Why an employee suggested re-gluing tire decals * Why manufacturer and dealership safety recommendations were ignored Until this is addressed, I cannot recommend CarMax—especially this location—to anyone concerned about safety or accountability.
