Cross-threaded alternator Dropped off my 2011 Ram truck for leaking head gaskets, and had to replace the heads, which were both warped. Upon retrieving my truck, the mechanic i Dropped off my 2011 Ram truck for leaking head gaskets, and had to replace the heads, which were both warped. Upon retrieving my truck, the mechanic informed me the alternator was failing, and should be replaced soon. Driving the truck a short distance resulted in a battery alarm on the dash, a condition which wasn't occurring when I dropped off the truck. After returning home, I purchased a new alternator and began pulling the top cover off the motor. I found the nut on the output terminal of the alternator had been cross-threaded, and the lug connecting the wire loose between the bottom of the post and the jammed nut. The threads were damaged on the post, and it took a lot of work with a metric tap and die set to correct the post and the nut. The loose nut should have been obvious to the mechanic. I hope he payed closer attention to properly torquing down the heads than he did reinstalling the alternator. :( More
