I don’t ever leave poor reviews, but I have no choice here. Towards the end of May my 2013 Sorento’s engine blew. I had it towed to Destination Kia. The service person I delt with was very helpful and was able to have the engine replaced by Kia as part of the warranty. Kia provided a rental for the repair time, which was just about a month. When the engine was finally ready (3 days before a family driving trip to Wisconsin) I was told that the alternator needed replacing. I was quoted a cost of over $800. That seemed exorbitant. I was also told I would need a new fuel pump. They shared a video with me of a sound in the garage, and said it was the fuel pump. After checking prices at auto shops, and finding out that I could buy an alternator for less than $300 at NAPA, I called back to let them know I didn’t want them to do the work. They had already started the alternator (I told them not to do the fuel pump)and ended up charging me under $500- still a lot for less than an hours work on a $200 part. When I picked up my car, there was no noise at all from the fuel pump. It seemed to be running fine. But shortly after driving away I realized the radio didn’t work any more. Once I was able to stop, I realized the whole UVO system wasn’t working, including the screen. I called Destination Kia right away and they said to stop back the next day. In the meantime I checked all the fuses in the car and tried the factory reset of the radio. No fuse was blown and the reset did nothing. When I returned the next day I spoke to the Service manager, Tom, as well as the service person who had been working with me, Rich. I expressed my frustration- I was leaving for a big trip with small kids the next day and needed the radio and camera to work. Their response was that they had no way to know of my radio was working when it was towed to them. It absolutely was - I was listening to the Bluetooth while I was waiting for the tow truck when my engine blew. I also expressed frustration that it was not only the radio, but I also just paid for an alternator that was fine when it was towed in, and they tried saying my fuel pump was going. Now I could maybe believe there could be one coincidence and perhaps in a strange situation the alternator just happened to go when the engine did. But being told the alternator, fuel pump (which was fine) and now my whole radio system needed replacing…way to much of a coincidence. And their response was “sorry- it’s not under warranty anymore and I can get a cheap $100 radio at Best Buy.” At the time I didn’t have the time to deal with this. But after speaking to many people, including a very reputable Auto Radio business, they have all told me how insane this is. I called Destination Kia again to try and speak to a GM and was told there wasn’t one. I was put through to the sales manager who listened and said he would have the service manager get back to me again- which he hasn’t. Clearly Destination Kia is responsible for the electrical issues with the alternator and radio when the engine was repaired. I already (over) paid for the alternator and I should not have to be financially responsible for a $600 radio system that was working when it arrived at their dealership. It should absolutely not be that difficult for this business to take responsibility for a mistake that was clearly made on their watch. I do believe it was a mistake- because the alternative would be they are just trying to make up the cost of the engine, which would be incredibly despicable. More
