She assured me that the staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and no-pressure. Hannah made the entire car-buying experience a breeze from start to finish. I feel so lucky to have found such a steal of a 2010 Subaru Outback! Will definitely be recommending Exeter Subaru to everyone I know looking for a car in the future. More

Your salesman, John Webster, has made that experience a pleasant one on two separate occasions. I thank Exeter Subaru for working with me and my daughter on the purchase of this vehicle. I was so pleased that the VIP $500 was applied for us after discussion. I will be back to purchase another vehicle in about 3 years. Thanks again!! More

Love Subarus -- Am Ambivalent about Subaru Dealers I have been driving Subarus for over 30 years. I've had five of them and I've loved them all. They are reliable, comfortable, and only in their "old a I have been driving Subarus for over 30 years. I've had five of them and I've loved them all. They are reliable, comfortable, and only in their "old age" do they develop problems (alas, they're pretty consistent as to which one -- they blow head gaskets. Four of my five have done so, though all did so in the 200,000-miles-plus range). My problem -- and it's not just with Exeter Subaru -- is Subaru dealers. Of the four dealers I've done business with (two of my Subarus came from the same dealer), only one, Milford (NH) Subaru, provided a satisfactory experience at every level. One of the reasons I went with Exeter Subaru was the poor experience I'd had with a dealer closer to where I now live. Alas, Exeter -- at least at the retail end of things -- was no better than the others. I felt somewhat "bait and switched" on the price, the financing, the way optional extras were presented. Though, admittedly, they were less pressuresome about those than some dealers, I still had to wade through a variety of optional extras I chose to decline. My other problem really had to do more with my sense of the "atmosphere" at the dealership. The salesman who I dealt with was extraordinarily young -- and, though he was personable, his inexperience showed. I looked around the showroom and all but one of the sales staff were young. It led me to wonder what kind of turnover they have. At Milford Subaru, the same sales staff could be counted on, even when I returned to buy a second car years after the first one. The fellow who I dealt with at Exeter, I am sure will be there only a short while. Is there something wrong in the work atmosphere? Is that indicative of something I should be wary about as the consumer? In the end, I bought the car -- and, being a Subaru, I'm sure I'll love it. But I hope my experience at the service end is better than what I experienced at McGovern in North Hampton. That's what drove me here in the first place. More

Don't expect them to honor ad prices or downpayments My wife and I were looking to buy a Subaru Legacy and did our research on Exeter Subaru's website. We saw that they still had a large number of 2017 m My wife and I were looking to buy a Subaru Legacy and did our research on Exeter Subaru's website. We saw that they still had a large number of 2017 models in stock. We should have asked ourselves why they were the only dealership with sixteen plus 2017 models in stock when we were four months into the 2018 calendar year, but we thought their advertised prices reflected a willingness to move product off the lot. The Legacy Sport was listed on their website at $25,907 and right below the advertised price was an offer listed for 0% APR through the manufacturer. There was no indication, suggestion, or implication that the advertised price included any incentives or rebates which would be incompatible with the financing promotion. So we went into the dealership, took our test drive, and were expected to be offered purchase of the car at the advertised price. When we sat down at the salesperson's desk to discuss the out the door price we asked about dealer/doc fees, these are pretty standard, but obviously we wanted to know the actual costs since there is some minor variations from dealer to dealer. We agreed that their doc fees of $489 were reasonable and within the industry standard. We then asked the sales manager (David Flowers) about financing. At first he didn't seem to be aware that Subaru was offering 0% APR on their legacy models and was quoting variable financing of 3+% depending on our credit rating. Having done my research I asked him if there were any special manufacturer incentives available. The other sales person sitting behind the computer attempted to direct David's attention toward the computer screen while David dismissed her and continued to discuss third party financing options. My wife and I told David that we were under the impression that Subaru was offering special financing and he indicated that he would have to "go to the back and ask" about the offers. When he returned he informed us that Subaru was in fact offering 0% APR, but an extra $500 would have to be added to the purchase price as a "fee" to get the APR. Obviously it is often the case that manufacturers will offer cash incentives in lieu of special financing rates, but I was unable to find any verbiage on Exeter Subaru's website or the manufacturer's website suggesting the existence of such a fee or suggesting or implying that the advertised price ($25,907) was cash contingent and specifically included any rebates or incentives. We attempted to negotiate this "fee" away to no avail with the floor manager Jason coming in and cementing that the "fee" was non-negotiable. Feeling duped with left the dealership and clearly indicated that the fee was a non-started and $25,907 was our walking away price and we were unwilling to pay more than the advertised price (other than doc fees). The following Thursday (04/12/2018) we received a phone call from a different salesperson, Isaac. Isaac told us that they weren't getting a lot of interest on the 2017 Sport and were being pressured by the manufacturer to move them off the lot to make room for the newer models. He asked "what can I do to put you in a vehicle today". At this point I told him about the "fee" and that we were willing to pay the advertised purchase price of $25,907 combined with 0% financing. He told me that "We don't want to lose your business over $500" and that there was a miscommunication about the $500 and that it wasn't a fee, but rather a "downpayment" which would be applied to the purchase price. I explained that it was made to be a fee by both Dave Flowers and floor manager Jason, but he assured us that it was only a downpayment. I told him that I would have to talk to my wife about it, but we had no qualms about paying a downpayment. The next day he called my wife and talked with her and gave the same story about a "downpayment". My wife told him that we would be willing to pay the advertised price of $25,907 assuming that they would also throw in some all-weather floor mats. Isaac indicated that he would need to confirm that deal and spoke with someone off-phone. When he returned he confirmed that we would pay $25,907 for the Legacy Sport, $489 in doc fees, and would get the all-weather floormats for free. We agreed to pay a $500 downpayment over the phone to hold the car at the agreed upon purchase price and were transferred to David Flowers to take our financial information over the phone so we could pick up the car the following Tuesday, Tuesday afternoon I received a phone call from the floor manger Jason who told me that they would not be honoring their oral contract and that there was in fact a $500 fee that they were charging to get the 0% APR. I reminded him of the clear agreement we had with Isaac who had repeatedly assured us that the $500 was merely a downpayment and Subaru did NOT include a $500 incentive in lieu of the promotional APR. Jason indicated that he "didn't care" what Isaac had told us and that I "should have known" after talking with him the prior Saturday that the fee was non-negotiable. After insisting that they honor the clear oral contract we made with the authorized agent/representative of dealership (Isaac) which included the exchange of money for the promise of purchase price he transferred me to his general manager, Darren. I reaffirmed with Darren what we had discussed with Isaac and that we had entered into a clear contract with him concerning the purchase price and that he indicated that there was no "fee" to get the APR and that they didn't want to "lose our business over just $500". Darren flat out told me he had no interest in honoring the agreed upon oral contract and that the $500 deposit was immaterial as there was no signed purchase agreement. Darren indicated he was "already losing over $3,000" on the car and accused me of trying to take advantage of a clear "pricing mistake" by requesting that they honor the price advertised on the website and that asking for the floormats was an untenable request that I should have known better than to ask for given my previous conversation with Jason. Darren indicated that the boilerplate language indicating that there was no "warranty" as to the advertised price indemnified them from having to disclose additional "fees" or "incentives" that were part of the purchase price and incompatible with the listed APR. Darren continued to refuse to honor the agreed upon price and told me he had "better things to do" than continue to argue with me and the best he could do was return my downpayment as without a "signed purchase agreement" he was under no obligation to honor the advertised price which was explicitly agreed upon by both parties and sealed with the exchange of earnest money/good faith downpayment. TL;DR The advertised price of their website may not be accurate and you may be asked to pay additional "fees" not explicitly discussed or advertised in order to get the advertised offers or incentives. The salespeople are apparently not authorized agents of the company and cannot agree to specific prices. A downpayment means absolutely nothing absent a signed purchase agreement. And $500 is apparently worth more to them than their word and good customer service. More
