The tire pressure monitoring system requires periodic adjustment of the tire pressures due to normal air loss and variations in pressure from temperature. As a rule, there is a 1 PSI change in tire pressure for every 10 degrees in temperature. If tires were set correctly on an 80 degree and the temperature drops 40 degrees (down to 50 degrees) over night, there is a 4 PSI drop in pressure, which is enough to show low tire pressure. In the past, these variations went unchecked and caused premature tire wear and in some cases a blow out. All manufacturers are now required by federal law to have a tire pressure monitoring system.
