I know the market value, trade in value, the taxes, fees..etc. I have purchased so many cars for myself and others, that I know exactly what to expect. They used old school dealership tricks to maximize their profits like devaluing my trade, telling me inventory is in stock to secure an appointment in store, and psychological tricks which results in a battle with the finance manager to get the best "deal". The few issues I had with Ray is to not bash your competition. I was in a situation where I bought a car for my then fiance (now ex) . Her credit was shot and her 2018 focus clutch went out 3 times and was no longer in warranty. She was in desperate need of a new car and we decided to go with a Volkswagen Tiguan. The deal at the time was good. We got a thousand off MSRP, 0% APR, and purchased gap because of the negative equity. Ray made a comment that didn't set well with me. He said "Wow, they really took you to the cleaners didn't they?" Not really, I did the math and they gave me a "good" deal and the math added up for the value of her car and the value of the new Volkswagen I had. Also when I rolled over $10k of negative equity from her trade in to the new car, I NEEDED the gap coverage. Now granted, I made the mistake putting that car under my name and not hers. But I own up to the mistake and learned from it, but blaming my situation on a dealer was wrong. The other major issue I had is I pointed out the car buyer guide on the window. It said "AS IS NO WARRANTY". I asked him about that and said its still under the mileage and still has some coverage. After the test drive and negotiations, he sneakily put in the "certification" charge of $1478. Basically, he slammed on an extended warranty and didn't disclose that with the out the door price. Their quote for the 2019 4Runner was $7-8k MORE than any dealer in a 3 hour radius. Also, settle down with the question, how much do you want to put down? Let's talk about the cost of the car first and THEN we can discuss downpayment. Ray knew my sales experience going in, and he continued using these tactics on me. Again...this has to go along with his training and experience. I felt like I was honest and fair with everything and I kept getting a show and I was the guest of honor. After a lot of back and forth on a car, I left. It took well over 2 hours from entering the dealership, doing a test drive, and negotiating that I left burned out and exhausted. The final out the door price was $1,500 more expensive than other dealerships with comparable milage and features. I went home and emailed Ray to give me the best deal on the new one and surprisingly it came back fair. I put the deposit down and that was that. I had an appointment with Hanover Toyota and I went to see what they could do. I was in and out within 45 minutes with a better model with a much better experience. Called Ray and requested to refund my deposit and I will never step foot into this dealership, or affiliates again, not even for service. Make sure you do your homework, be aware of the tricks they play in the dealership and be ok with walking out. There are plenty of good dealerships out there that will put their customers first and this is not one of them. Long story short. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. More
