Beware of their prices for used cars! I took my daughter to buy a 2018 used Civic about 2 weeks ago. After test driving and selecting a car, the dealership dropped a bomb on us. Their "fees" for selling t to buy a 2018 used Civic about 2 weeks ago. After test driving and selecting a car, the dealership dropped a bomb on us. Their "fees" for selling the car were approximately $2,000 on top of the list price. No, I'm not talking about tax. In other words, they are advertising cars much cheaper than their competitors to get you in the door. Then they hit you with these extra fees. No other dealer has fees anywhere close to $2K. We walked out and went to a reputable dealer. More
Funny ... Looking at posting a review of the service department and see another comment about battery scam ... Well, here is my story of woe at HofH … I have waited several weeks now before posting t department and see another comment about battery scam ... Well, here is my story of woe at HofH … I have waited several weeks now before posting the below, because I wanted to make sure my initial conclusion of being scammed on my warranty service attempt at HofH was correct or not. I don’t know but all I can say is, “Buyer Aware!! Don’t go there!”. Me: “Yes, I am here to have warranty service on my battery. Engine will not start and I had to have the car jumped twice in the last couple days. I purchased the Honda battery at the beginning of last year from you.” Honda Service Advisor: “Sure no problem sir, we will take a look at that for you. Please just have a seat in our waiting room.” While waiting In the sitting area with my son, I commented to him that I hope they don’t try to scam me and that I really hate coming here, especially during Covid. I tell him that I always get a feeling here that I’m being upsold on everything, but maybe this time it will different. So … After about a half hour or so, the service advisor came back with the verdict. Fact or fiction? Honda Service Advisor: “We ran the vehicle through the big Bertha test and it looked at the battery, the alternator, and the starter. The battery tested fine as well as the alternator. The issue is your starter.” He then proceeds to flash the report at me. Me: “But, but, but ….. I had the vehicle in a few months ago for the same thing and nothing was mentioned then. I only came in today to get a warranty service on the battery.” Honda Service Advisor: “Well, the starter works this way and it can fail, as well as can give sort of false positive activity when trying to start the car. I recommend the starter being replaced at a cost of 800+ dollars, which would be for a remanufactured one. The warranty is actually better than a new one, that would be $200 more. The company is trying to push the remanufactured ones so the supply chain keeps moving. It will take about three hours to do”. Hummm …. Sensing something a little fishy, thankfully being that it was the end of the day, I said that I have to speak with my wife to coordinate and would let him know in the morning. Yeah right!! I then immediately texted my repair person at a local shop. My other car is an Audi. Me: “Hey, how much to replace starter on Honda, out the door, with a warranty?” Local Repair Shop, after about 10 minutes: “You are looking at … installed, with a 36 month warranty, the cost is about $500 with tax.” Me: “OK. I’ll be there first thing in the morning. Please check things first”. After a couple hours, on the next morning, I get the verdict from the local repair shop. Local repair shop: “We waited for a couple hours before checking your vehicle because we wanted the battery to rest. Testing shows that the battery needs to be replaced. Here’s a photo of the results. Cost will be about 250 bucks for battery, installed. Ok?” Me: “Wow, really? Ok, go for it.” Me thinking …. Even if they are wrong and I have to replace the starter, it will be a lot cheaper than doing it with Honda of Hackettstown, as starter there would be 800+ dollars. A battery and starter with the local shop would be less than $800. LESSONS LEARNED: 1. Listen to your gut, first impressions are usually correct. 2. It is OK to say no. You can get a second opinion on vehicle repairs! 3. Support your local business owners versus the big dealership, as the relationship is more important! 4. Don’t believe the warranty BS! The problem will of course be something else. 5. Obviously, don’t trust or take my car to Honda of Hackettstown! Best way to resolve is to get a refund check of the original purchase price of battery of $183 at HofH. Of course, local repair shop was a bit higher, but no need to be unfair. I should conclude and mention that this happen 30 days ago and ever since then, my local repair shop was right. NO BATTERY OR STARTER ISSUES!! More
