Jim, Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your concern. I investigated the interactions we had with you regarding your interest in buying the Forester we have in stock. It looks to me like the the quote we sent you on the True Car portal clearly shows the documentary fee, with the sales price actually including the documentary fee in the starting sales price. Here is what the offer we sent you looks like on the True Car Portal Total Before Tax $11,499 Exp. 06/12/2020 True Price Breakdown Sale Price $10,700 Dealer Documentation Fee $799 Total Dealer Fees & Accessories $799 Total after Dealer Fees & Accessories $11,499 I am sorry that we were not able to come to agreement on your purchase of the Forester, but I truly don't see where we did not properly communicate the Documentary Fee to you prior to you getting here. I think you will find as you continue to shop for a vehicle that all of the local dealers have a Documentary Fee and that ours is very competitive with other New Car franchised dealerships. This response is deceptive. As an initial matter, your customers should know that they receive no value whatsoever for the fee. It's just a deceptive way to pretend that you are offering as lower price. Second, I negotiated a price with your salesman and walked through the "out the door" cost -- which included sales tax and tags. He did not mention the fee. Then, at closing, the fee magically appeared on the the closing documents. Once again, it wasn't mentioned -- presumably in the hope that I wouldn't notice or would be afraid to object. The bottom line is that this was a dishonest transaction and customers should be extremely wary of doing business with you. I certainly plan to tell anyone who will listen.

I am sorry that you feel you were deceived. I am sure that was not the goal. It is a fee that we have on every deal so I can see how a salesperson would not make a big deal about it since they see it every deal, every day. However, that does not make it OK to assume that the customers know that too. I will work with our sales staff to make sure the fee is discussed more thoroughly during the sales process. In the end, it is a fee that will be charged on every deal (including employee deals) so there is no need to avoid it. Thank you for bringing this to my attention so I can use it as a training opportunity.
