Mr. Steeves, Your response seems disingenuous, as I e-mailed you about this problem on 03/17/22 and I also copied the e-mail to your service manager Mr. Coons. In any case below is a copy of the e-mail I sent you. Dennis Steeves General Manager We are writing to you to express our disappointment for the service provided by IRA Toyota on March 14, 2022. I took our truck to have service for the 25,000 miles and perform the Maine State Inspection. I arrived at 07:45 am and the first thing I noticed was that I did not get an itemization of what the work will entail and the approximate price for it. (Amy explained to me later that she had COVID, and because of that she didn’t provide the paperwork??!!) After waiting for about an hour and half, Amy Dunn (Service Advisor) approached me to inform me that there was a "leak" at the power steering pump. Basically, she said that the pump was "busted". And to replace it would cost $765.60. I requested to see the pump as I was surprised that a truck with only 22,335 miles would have this "busted" pump. This is what I saw: A) The drops of oil that the technician showed me were few and not red colored as the hydraulic oil is in the steering system of the car. These drops looked like regular motor oil. B) There were not any marks of oil anywhere else other than at the power steering pump. I explained that I did not notice any oil drops in our garage and had no problems with the steering system of the truck. I told them that I would like this area (power steering pump) washed clean and I would get a second opinion. This, by the way, was also the mechanic's recommendation. The mechanic did not know why the drops of oil did not have a reddish look as the steering fluid has. After discussing this problem with Mr. Coons, he first told Amy to give us the sticker for the MSI. Nevertheless, when Brian entered the discussion, Mr. Coons changed his mind and we agreed that we would drive the truck for about a week and then Brian would check the power steering pump to verify that it was not leaking, and then he would provide the stickers for the MSI. Yesterday , I crawled under my truck to check if I could see the power steering pump leaking or, at the very least, some drops of hydraulic oil anywhere in the vicinity of the power steering pump. Well, I did not see any leaks. Everything looked fine and dry. In my opinion and understanding, and you might disagree with this, Ira Toyota tried unsuccessfully to swindle me for a $765.00 replacement of the power steering pump. Today, I took the truck to another establishment and the truck passed the Maine State Inspection without a problem---no leakage anywhere, let alone the power steering pump. Another problem, in addition to the above, is that the invoice for the "work" performed included also a "Customer pay shop charge for repair order" in the amount of $10.27. I have been a client of Prime Toyota for several years and have never seen such a charge. When we finally got the truck, I also noticed that the exterior had not really been washed...the truck was only wetted--not cleaned at all. Superior service? In closing, because of all of the above, I will not be coming back to Ira Toyota. I did pay another $12.50 to have a second opinion about the power steering pump and the state inspection; however considering that I will not have to see any of you again, it was worthwhile.
