The car was $10,000 and change, and the cost of having to extend the trip during the diagnosis, logistical plans to get back to Phoenix (rental car, Ubers, taxis, hotels, etc) cost another $5,000-10,000. When i called in to ask if there was anything they could do for me the owner said no, and i said i may open a lawsuit. He responded "good luck!" After seeing the star level review of this dealership, if you experienced similar issues please contact me at Thompson.asumkt@gmail.com and I'll approach a lawyer regarding any actions that can be taken towards this dealership, employees in on it, and the owner. Will be leaving reviews where ever possible to save people from this awful experience. Will post links to those review locations here so anyone else that wishes to can leave reviews wherever possible. More
Lipstick on a pig. Well actually, many pigs and lots and lots of lipstick. My son was interested in two cars that they had on their lot. He drove out there on 12/23 to look at them, test drive, and hopefully make a purchase that day. The owner, “Ace” came out and told him that they don’t let anyone drive their cars that have manual transmissions as they are apt to breaking. Instead, my son (who has only ever owned stick shifts) had the privilege of being chauffeured around by the lot attendant instead of being allowed to drive. Seriously, how do you expect to sell a car if you don’t let the buyer drive it??? Anyway, my son was still interested in one of the cars, a silver 2010 Mazda Speed3, so he and I went back on 12/26. When we got there, I recognized the place. I then reminded my son that he and I had been there about two years ago and looked at a tan Mini Cooper that was shiny and nice on the outside, but it was obvious the car had been poorly maintained, then patched together and priced at about 3X what it should have been. I mean, the car was at the end of its life. The salesman was also very pushy, evasive with the questions we asked, and just down right sketchy. We left pretty quickly that day. But I digress… This time, once we got on the lot, I saw that several of the cars had recently been poorly painted. I mean, it’s really easy to tell: orange peeling, bubbles, paint not matching the inside of the door jams, & etc. I told the guy we wanted to drive the Mazda, and I guess that since my son had his old man with him this time, the guy knew we were serious. We were lucky and he let us drive it! (with the lot porter riding in the backseat, of course). Funny thing is, I—the old man, wasn’t buying the car, my son was. In fact, had “Ace” allowed him to drive the car initially, he probably would’ve bought it then and there. I’m glad that “Ace” was a d#%k before because I got to see the car myself and show my son (who was seeing it through rose colored glasses) all of the concerning things I discovered about it. Anyway, the car drove ok, but there was a deep rattle/thumping coming from the wheel area in the back, on the passenger side. And then when we got it back to the lot, the Mazda had a hot plastic/burning smell. Popped the hood and the engine was sparkling clean—on top. Ran my fingers in a couple of places not visible from the top, and they came out caked with black goo. There were also components in the front of the engine compartment that were new. Just in the front though. I had a closer look at the front bumper and the gapping was way off; the gap on the passenger side was as narrow as a dime, but on the drivers side, you could stack three nickels and shove them between where the bumper and the fender met. I then crawled under the car and saw that the bumper was attached to the frame with baling wire! Yes, that’s right: rusty BALING WIRE. We could tell this car had been wrecked just by looking at it. But for a goof, we asked the guy what his best price would be and he wouldn’t budge a cent. Didn’t bother asking about taking it to Mazda for a pre-purchase inspection; this car was nowhere near worth what they were asking just from what we saw. Who knows what else the pre purchase inspection would’ve revealed. Decided we had wasted too much time there and moved on. We got a fresh start the next morning, found a great car, and bought it that day. TLDR: These guys are car flippers; they buy wrecked/worn out/crappy cars (pigs) from auctions, fix the blatantly obvious things as cheaply as possible, slap a cheap coat of paint (lipstick) on them, and try to sell them for far more than they’re worth. When I received no response after several days, I called the dealership to make the inquiry verbally and was responded to arrogantly, rudely, and abruptly dismissed as if simply mentioning the idea was OUTLANDISH by the sales person who answered the phone. Seems maybe they do not want their car independently inspected...🤔🧐🤨 This experience seems to confirm most of the others mentioned here about J&M IMPORTS. Maybe they could IMPORT the book "How To Win Friends and Influence People" or " The World's Greatest Salesman" to work on their SOFT skills of sales. Here's the Response from the owner I received: Rick. We welcome mechanic inspections, we have for 15 years. Like we explained to you on the phone, due to liability reasons we can't let you take it overnight on a 3 hour round trip to your mechanic. Please find a mechanic shop within a 10 mile sqaure radius. There are about 1000 shops within that distance. Thank you. THIS EXPLANATION IS A COMPLETE AND TOTAL LIE!! NOTHING WAS EXPLAINED TO ME!! The phone response to my inquiry was simply, "No chance." with an insulting laugh. This place does NOT WANT YOUR MECHANIC to look at their 2005 Buick LaCrosse, at least. More
