I hate the car buying process. My salesman Aiman was very nice and helpful. I think I paid too much, but I do love my car! Call a day ahead of time to ask for details about a Tacoma. Ask to speak directly with the manager to eliminate the middle man and make an offer over the phone. I explain my circumstances, I’m on vacation and have totaled my previous vehicle and would be driving about eight hours round trip to make a purchase and want everything to be in order beforehand. Let the manager (Bob) know I’ll be placing the down payment on my credit card and I place a deposit on the vehicle to ensure it will be available and ready upon arrival the next day. Show up to the dealership, check over the vehicle. Externally good condition, some moderate wear in the bed which is surprising for a truck with so few miles. Internally appears decent condition as well but was not detailed thoroughly. Crumbs in the cup holders and gearshift, somebody left their house keys in the center console, windows are hazy and not well cleaned. I can detail my vehicle after purchase so all of this can be looked over. We agreed on an okay price (not a great deal, but not a bad one) and I sat down to sign the papers. ONLY after signing all the paperwork does the dealer rep (Chris Merx) tell me I can’t place the down payment on a credit card. This is a LEXUS dealership, how many people come in and place entire vehicles on their credit cards? I also can’t pay via debit. I ask about ACH transfer and they similarly refuse. I ask about wire transfer and they say sure! Leave to get the papers, then upon return a nameless manager walks over and says he can’t accept a wire because they only get checked once a day and they won’t be able to verify the payment has been issued before I leave the lot. No wire transfer. They tell me I have to get a cashiers check (no problem if they’d addressed this the day previously as I bank with USAA and could have had one overnighted.) I spend an hour and a half attempting to get a cashiers check between phone calls with USAA and seeing if I could literally open a bank account at Chase just for the cashiers check, with no success. I return to the dealership, at this point very frustrated, explaining very simply that for the deal to work they will have to take the down payment on card because I do not have any other options. They insist it’s not their problem, that it’s my fault for thinking I could place a down payment “of that size” on a credit card and won’t accommodate. At this point, I’m furious and I tell them in no uncertain terms that this is absolutely unacceptable, that I made it clear on the phone my down payment would be on a credit card and I was driving hours just to make this purchase and it’s unacceptable that they’re accepting no blame for stating any limitations to what they’re willing to put on a card, nor asking for a cashiers check ahead of time. They again, refuse to accept any blame and from his office (without ever coming out to discuss things face to face) Bob denies my ever stating I would use a card for a down payment. It’s about this point that they come up with a bright idea, if I take out a second car loan through them, they can finance the down payment and I can pay it off before it ever comes due! I told them this as well was unacceptable, that I shouldn’t have to take an additional hit on my credit because they won’t accept the means of payment I’m offering. I demand my deposit back, demand all forms I've signed are returned to me and furiously terminate the transaction. Not only did they fail to make any part of the transaction easy or amiable, they showed clear evidence of lack of attention to detail (an almost-new used car should be spotlessly clean) and absolutely wasted my time. I would never return to this dealership again and fervently recommend that no one else does either. More
