We responded to an ad for a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek with over 60,000 miles. When we visited the dealer, they provided a CarFax report which showed that some of the 60K mile service had been performed but di over 60,000 miles. When we visited the dealer, they provided a CarFax report which showed that some of the 60K mile service had been performed but did not show two items: spark plug change and CVT fluid change. Given the level of detail in the report, these missing items most likely had not been done. Based on pricing obtained from a repair shop, we asked for a price reduction of $800 to cover the cost of these two items. They reduced the price by $300 and provided an AutoNation Pre-Owned Inspection Report showing that all 125 inspected items on the list “Meets Standards.” We were disappointed in the failure to provide a vehicle with up-to-date service, but the inspection report provided documented assurance of the vehicle’s good condition, so we decided to purchase it and pay for spark plug and CVT fluid change. The transaction required signing many documents and the finance person who managed the purchase rushed us through the signings. One curious document was an agreement stating that we had declined an offer of permanently marking the catalytic converter. In fact, no such offer was made. I asked about the document but was given no further information. Nonetheless, I signed it assuming there would have been a charge for it. When I got home, I looked into catalytic converter marking and learned that California Vehicle Code 24020 mandates that car dealers permanently mark catalytic converters with a vehicle’s VIN before selling the vehicle. I called to discuss this with the finance manager and had to leave a voice mail. I did not receive a return call. It turns out that dealers circumvent the California mandate by having purchasers sign a declination document without telling them about the mandate. Failure to explain the document’s purpose is dishonesty by omission of the truth. Before I took the car to a shop for the spark plug and CVT fluid changes, I checked the cabin and engine air filters, Items 60 and 98, respectively, on the AutoNation Pre-Owned Inspection Report. According to the CarFax report, both had been replaced at just under 35K miles, but they were both dirty and full of debris. A closer inspection of the battery terminals, Report Item 89, also revealed a significant amount of corrosion, so I cleaned them thoroughly. These three items gave the lie to the AutoNation Pre-Owned Inspection Report, so when I took the vehicle for the spark plug and CVT fluid changes, I asked the mechanic to check some additional items. He found that the front brake pads had only 3-4 mm of thickness though the report said they had 5. Brake pads should be changed when thickness is 3 mm or less, so I had them replaced. The mechanic also found that both front struts were leaking fluid, control arm bushings were torn, and the outer tie rod joints were leaking grease. These last three are separate issues but are all included in Item 106 and would not be missed by a good mechanic’s inspection. Repair of all the items that were falsely reported as meeting standards came to over $3,800. CONCLUSION: IN ADDITION TO THE LACK OF TRUTHFULNESS BEHIND THE VIN MARKING DOCUMENT AND THE FAILURE TO COMPLETE 60K SERVICE, THE AUTONATION PRE-OWNED INSPECTION REPORT STATED FALSELY THAT ALL 125 ITEMS MEET STANDARDS. I CANNOT TRUST AUTONATION AND WILL NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM AGAIN. More

I had arrived in the evening, about an hour before closing time, and Valentin came to show me the car I had seen online. We began talking sales and it took some back and forth negotiations but eventua closing time, and Valentin came to show me the car I had seen online. We began talking sales and it took some back and forth negotiations but eventually I ended making the purchase. Even if it was after business hours, the staff, including George, who managed the finance portion, patiently took the time to complete the transaction. Valentin also made sure transportation was arranged so that I could pick up my car without any issues after I had my extras installed in my car. I had been to 3 other Lexus dealerships in the area and I’m glad I made my purchase here. Hopefully I will continue to get excellent service. More
