This is the second CRV I’ve purchased from McGrath. On the first 2019 purchased the trailer hitch installed was not a 2 inch receiver that I expected. On the first oil change on the 2019 the the oil life indicator was not reset, not easy to reset for the un informed. This service was for the 2022 CRV I purchased. Guess what the oil life sensor was not reset again. Just plain aggravating! The dealership in itself is a really up beat environment. Everyone is really attentive and helpful most importantly really kind. Compared to other dealers it was better. But the hard core pushing of trying to sell us extras during the financing discussion was very very VERY troublesome. We were made to wait an inordinately long time for the finance meeting. Despite having chosen our car weeks earlier, agreed on price in writing via email and in writing in a prior meeting, test driving it a different day, the process took 6+ hours. I feel they did it on purpose to exhaust us so we’d make decisions to buy expensive (unnecessary) services/warranties during the financing meeting. We live far from the dealer and emphatically refused the same extra services no less than half a dozen times, probably more. I’m an experienced car buyer and owner and know those services/ warranties make them big money and most people don’t use them or are denied coverage for certain things bc of driver contribution to the problem. And service departments often “find” other problems that need repair to charge you for at a higher price than most non-dealer mechanics. (I go to a Honda certified mechanic NOT the dealer service dept). The service dept is a BIG profit center for them (I have family in the auto sale industry). But I could see how our forced exhaustion and pressure to get our kids outta there after the first 4 hours may have resulted in us finally giving in just to be allowed to leave with our new car. Thankfully, my experience made me hold our ground (to the tune of 2500k). Still I gave them three stars, instead of 1, bc relative to car dealerships in general, they were honest in all other ways, unlike most other dealers. (What a sad commentary on the auto sale industry) The only experience I’ve had that didn’t involve a level of unethical coercion is Fletcher-Jones Honda in Chicago which, sadly, has since changed hands (City Honda now. They still own Fletcher-Jones Audi) Recommendation Advice: if you know you want a Honda go to Honda Elgin on Randall Road. 1. But do ALL your research a head of time. 2. Compare pricing, financing offers, via email from several different dealers and tell them you’re doing so. It will make them more competitive and real when they know they’re competing for your business. 3. If they won’t give you an out the door price via email, move on - do not buy from that dealer. They’ll tell you they don’t do that bc they want you in front of them so they can talk at you, control the story and make a sale on their terms instead of on your terms - an informed decision comparing cars and pricing in a calm non-pressured way. 4. Be well-rested. 5. Keep kids at home, if possible. If not possible, bring diapers, snacks and entertainment to avoid the pressure of decision making before kid meltdowns. 6. Be determined not to buy extras (warranties etc). 7. Be stoic and steadfast during the finance meeting. 8. Negotiate the car price BEFORE talking about trade-in value. 9. Know your trade-in value before you go in. They’re gonna try to get more profit from you by low-balling your trade-in, then fixit at cost and sell it fir a huge profit. 10. Know your credit score/financing power before you go in. If you have great credit demand the best financing. If you have poor credit, find a few good credit union and check use car loan rates. Don’t go in blind. They’ll try to sell you the highest percentage rate financing they can at the longest duration bc it’s ALL profit to them. 11. Check their math. I’ve found errors in over half my deals when double checking math. Don’t let your exhaustion and their finger-tapping assuage you to hurry and skip this. Only once was the math error in my favor. Don’t let them rush you through that. 12. Take time to make your decisions - every single one. Ask for time alone or with your partner to think through it with out the implicit or explicit pressure even if you have to do that 12 times. We did it 6-7 times at our last purchase.. They might try to push you and say things that make it seem the car might disappear if you don’t make a decision right in front of them. Even if it’s a coveted car being manufactured in numbers less than demand, that is wholly false and succumbing will result in an emotional decision made with coercion not well thought out reasoning.There is a car being manufactured right now to take that cars place. You can even put a deposit down on a car yet to be manufactured. 13. Be assertive and confident, especially if you’re a woman/non-binary. Don’t give a whisper of doubt for them to seize. You TELL them what your needs/bottom lines are and stick to them. If they balk, they just lost your business. There are always other dealers/cars. Always. Using these guidelines I started to walk out once - in 2016 - putting on my coat, sincerely done with that dealer. The manager RAN out of his office usurping the salesman’s power in the deal, and asked what I needed to close the deal today and not walk out. That got me 2k in savings. With other dealers, I’ve gotten them to give me $1800 & 1000k more for my trade-in than their second and third offer bc I KNEW the market and held my ground. I did not let THEM falsely “educate” me bc I came educated. I used Edmonds, Kelly Blue book, cars.com, car max (all of them significantly lower than what I get/got) and my mechanic whose estimate is always closest (he’s so lovely and good). My mechanic’s valuing was always higher than the other sources and the dealership. This time I got $2500 more than kelly blue book, Edmonds and car max valued/offered. I may have been able to get even more bc I knew what they were gonna get in resale value — 7500 more than they paid me, so they still got a very healthy profit even after the needed repairs. I now always negotiate my trade-in after getting the lowest price for my new car purchase, first — to avoid them trying to build their perceived loss of profit on the trade-in back into the new car purchase price. I’ve done the same thing with 4 Hondas -Prelude, 2 Accords and a minivan. On another purchase, I made the mistake of not knowing my trade-in value for our car and got worn down. I later figured-out they low-balled us by nearly 8k compared to the market survey I did on its resale value before repairs. We were tired and our newborn had been without us for over 6 hours).
