This customer has an 11-year old vehicle, 1999 Ford Mustang with 130,000 miles on it. On 11/8/10 the vehicle was towed in as a “no start” complaint. Dealer tested fuel pressure and fuel pump and determined the fuel pump was not operating. With the customer’s consent, the dealer replaced the fuel pump. The customer supplied a non-Ford aftermarket pump. On 11/16/10 the customer returned and stated it was “idling high” and making a “knocking noise.” Customer also wanted intake manifold looked at as cause of high idle. Dealer determined that the “Idle Arm Control” Motor (IAC) was bad and causing the idle concern. Replacing it fixed the idle. Intake was checked and is OK. (no charge to check) Dealer then had to have the vehicle 40 minutes as customer said it knocked only after it was good and hot and had been driven for a long time. Dealer determined “knock” noise was internal and best choice was to replace it due to age and mileage. Not cost effective to overhaul an engine this old. Also, new engine has 3-year, 100,000-mile warranty. Customer declined repair and took vehicle to have it done elsewhere. Dealer states: Replacing a fuel pump (in the gas tank) and the idle arm control motor (an electrical-computer system component) had no bearing on internal engine problems. Customer did not complain of “knock noise” until 2nd visit so really all we did was “replaced the fuel pump.” It is not possible for a bad fuel pump to make the engine go bad. The engine had pre-existing internal problems due to age and mileage of the vehicle.

Lets just clear this whole thing up. Your tech mis-diagnosed the problems the second time I brought it in. It was idling improperly due to a clogged fuel injector (mis-daignosis #1) the spark knock has been resolved with computer updates and the fuel injector fix (mis-diagnosis #2). It was in fact a spark knock and what i told the tech was that it was more prevalent when warmed up and under load (i.e. accelerating or going up a hill), not "good and hot and driven for a long time" that was his translation. what i meant by warmed up was that he let it sit and idle to warm up before taking it out. The car has been properly repaired by a different shop. Its absurd that just because a vehicle has a certain amount of miles on it that you assume it just needs a new engine and leave it at that. They asked me nothing about how well the vehicle had been maintained and could offer no alternative diagnosis (i.e. he completely missed the fact that one cylinder was not firing at all due to a clogged fuel injector). I hope your service techs are more careful with their diagnosis' in the future. Thank you.
