Quick fix for a strange engine smoke issue Earlier this year I had been out of town for about three weeks. Upon returning I started my 528 up and it smoked badly. I had never seen this before. Earlier this year I had been out of town for about three weeks. Upon returning I started my 528 up and it smoked badly. I had never seen this before. I immediately called Peterson BMW to ask if this was normal for a car that had been sitting. I was told it wasn't. They said I was welcome to bring it in and they would look at it. Within minutes it quit smoking and acted normal. I told them I would drive it a bit and see if it would do it again. It never happened again. I assumed it was an anomaly. Then a few weeks ago I had to leave town for about 12 days. When I returned I decided to use my phone to video starting the car in the event it smoked again after being parked. I started it and a large plume of smoke erupted from the tail pipe. I ran to the back of my car and captured it on video. Again after a few minutes it stopped and the car was fine. No lights ever came on and it ran fine. I immediately made an appointment with Peterson. When I got to my appointment I forwarded the video to my service rep and he showed the mechanic. The mechanic immediately knew what the issue was based on the video and proceeded to fix it. Apparently an oil pipe to the turbo had a bad ball in a check valve (a known issues on 528's). When he removed the part he confirmed it was bad and replaced it. They were fast and efficient and the car was back in my hands the next afternoon. More
