I negotiated my trade-in value and purchase price for a 2017 Chevy Silverado with a pre-approval letter ready to go. The sales manager, Calvin, called and texted me to confirm the out-the-door (OTD) price before I came to test drive the truck. When I arrived, they immediately insisted that I submit a second credit check, which required a hard inquiry on my credit. I declined since I had a pre-approval letter in hand and didn’t see the need for an additional hard ding on my credit, but they applied more pressure, reassuring me that they were "working with my bank and not going to submit the credit app." Of course, we all know they get commission and incentives for submitting loan apps at the dealership. Strangely, the paperwork they presented looked suspiciously like a credit application. Despite knowing what they were up to, I chose to move forward because I felt comfortable with the negotiated price and LOVED the truck. The kicker? They slid a second piece of paper across the table with a new OTD quote, roughly $4,000 higher than the agreed-upon price. The sales tactics of heavy pressure, long wait times ("wear them down until they’ll sign anything"), and last-minute add-on costs are outdated and blatantly deceptive.
