My daughter neded a new car; she had looked at Hondas, Mazdas - but not yet at the Chrysler 200. I accompanied her on a test drive - and she decided - as far as "desirability" goes - it was at the top of Mazdas - but not yet at the Chrysler 200. She's a single Mom and is on a tight budget - she knew she had a limit of about $200 a month. To make a long story short, Manny (Manuel Bailey) put a little bit extra into her trade-in, and Dad put in a little cash himself, and my daughter is now driving her preferred choice for $219/month. And she loves it. At the end of the day, it's a lot of car for the money. That's one story...; but there's another. I had a 2011 Wrangler; only had 4000 miles on it and I loved it. The "oil change" light came on - and since I'm a reasonably good mechanic myself, I drained and refilled the crankcase and installed a new oil filter. I started it up, checked for leaks - and parked in it the garage - preferring to drive my motorcycle whenever the weather allows. Several days later, I get a bit of an emergency phone call from a friend and I jump into the Jeep to respond. Within a couple of miles, the "oil pressure" light comes on. I was close to a quick-lube place - so I pulled in. Not knowing what was wrong (and yet suspecting the filter), I asked them to perform another service on the engine. Quickly... Remember, I was in a hurry. I drove away thinking I could still get where I needed to be when the engine began ticking, then knocking - and by the time I got back home - clunking. I called the dealership the next morning - and we decided it would be best to have it towed in. Two days later, I get a call that says a.) I needed a new engine; and b.) it was not going to be covered by warranty. I'd have to come up with the $6,000 for a new engine out-of-pocket. The Service Department's theory was that when I had changed the filter, the gasket from the old filter had stuck in place - and the gasket from the new filter then failed to seal. (Remember, I had started it up to check for leaks - and had none; maybe I didn't let it run long enough...?). And there was fresh oil and yet another new filter in place by now. I couldn't prove that I didn't screw it up (and in truth, I myself began to wonder if I had) - so I thought about the options. First, I wondered who the dealership was trying to protect and represent? Chrysler? The dealership? Certainly not me; the last thing I wanted to do was be liable for a $6000 repair. Should I deny, deny, deny...? Not knowing what to do, I prayed. If you don't know God, that will make no sense to you, but my life being what it is, I speak to Him all the time. I don't always get the answer I want, but I do get the answer I need. Anyway, whilst dealing with Manny for my daughter's new car, we explored the options for me. I ended up in yet another Chrysler 200 - and all of the sales incentives went to pay for the repair bill on the Jeep. Ain't exactly how I wished it would have worked out, 'cause I loved the Jeep - but, what the heck, I've got a new car. So I left that day with two new 200's - one a touring model that my daughter drives, and a 200S that's mine. I'm liking it better all of the time. (The disappointment of giving up my Jeep has slowly been replaced with the realization that I've got one cool car.) I also left with a sense of gratitude to Manny Bailey. Yeah, he got to sell two new cars, and yeah, that's what he's in business for...; but, at the end of the day, he helped me. And I'm grateful for that. Mostly, I'm grateful to the mechanics in the Service Department - the ones who wondered about a guy who could have lied (if necessary), stuck to his guns, and saved himself $6000 - and likely convinced the dealership to replace the engine under warranty. But the guy (me) didn't. Ain't no tribute to the guy - 'cause he (me) did think about doing just that. The glory goes to God. HE knew I'd be tempted, and He also knew what I would ultimately do; I was the one who didn't know what I would do - and I was the one who needed to learn. The reason I'm grateful to the mechanics is because I promised Manny that - someday_ I would tell them where the guy (me) found the courage to do what was painful at the time, but also the truth. I took my 03 Dodge Sprinter to Peoria location for a recall and decided to have glow plugs changed and general service done. Nine weeks and now waiting for a court date. BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU CONSIDER THEM FOR ANY SERVICE WORK ON A DODGE SPRINTER. More
