"Transparency" seems to be the latest buzzword dealerships love to advertise, but my experience proved otherwise. Before making a 90-mile trip to this dealership, I repeatedly asked the salespe dealerships love to advertise, but my experience proved otherwise. Before making a 90-mile trip to this dealership, I repeatedly asked the salesperson for some basic numbers so I could determine whether the truck was even within my budget. Every time I asked, I was told they couldn't discuss pricing over the phone and that I had to come into the dealership first. I explained that I didn't want to waste their time or mine. I've walked away from vehicles before because I couldn't afford them, and I simply wanted enough information to know if this one made sense. After getting nowhere, I created my own spreadsheet using the numbers from their website. I included the truck's advertised price, a conservative $12,000 value for my trade (even though I owed $14,000), the tax savings from the trade, the $2,000 negative equity, my pre-approved interest rate, estimated taxes and fees, loan term, and calculated monthly payment. I emailed the spreadsheet to the salesperson and asked three simple questions: 1. Does this look right? 2. Is my math correct? 3. Am I missing anything? Instead of answering those questions, he continued asking when I was coming to look at the truck. When I replied, "When are you going to answer my email?" his only response was, "It doesn't seem unreasonable whatsoever." Based on that response, I believed I would be financing just over $27,000. That was a payment I was comfortable with, so I made the 90-mile drive, put more miles on my trade, burned half a tank of gas, and invested several hours of my day. I test-drove the truck, and it was exactly what I wanted. Then came the appraisal. Over the previous few weeks, I had already received trade-in offers of $11,000, $12,500, and even outright purchase offers between $12,000 and $13,000 from other dealerships. This dealership offered me just $9,000 for my trade. The real shock came when they presented the financing numbers. Instead of financing around $27,000 as I had reasonably expected based on the salesperson's response, they wanted me to finance over $44,000. I immediately got my keys back and left. Was I upside down on my trade? Yes. I fully understood that going in. I wasn't expecting a miracle, and I know dealerships have to make money. What I expected was honesty and transparency. If my spreadsheet was fundamentally flawed because of how negative equity affected the deal, that was the perfect opportunity for the salesperson to explain it. Instead, I was told my numbers "didn't seem unreasonable," which gave me false confidence and resulted in a completely unnecessary trip. I'm just a guy trying to buy a truck and get the best deal I can. How long are dealerships going to claim they value relationships, treat customers like family, and pride themselves on transparency while refusing to have straightforward conversations before asking customers to spend hours driving to their showroom? Transparency isn't a slogan—it's being willing to have an honest conversation before asking someone to invest their time and money. Unfortunately, that wasn't my experience here. More
