The way this business is treating customers is a major issue and they need to be held accountable for their behavior. Spartanburg Toyota is scamming vulnerable (young, old, and women) customers out of mon issue and they need to be held accountable for their behavior. Spartanburg Toyota is scamming vulnerable (young, old, and women) customers out of money. We personally experienced this on 10/10/2025. On 10/10/2025, my son took his perfectly functioning, well maintained, low mileage, 2019 Toyota to Spartanburg Toyota for JUST an oil change. Next thing I know, I’m getting a call from him saying he needs help. I went to Spartanburg Toyota to find that they have talked him into running his credit to purchase a NEW car that he can’t even get approved for because the payment will be too high for his income which they could have figured out before ruining his credit by making multiple hard inquiries. The ONLY reason he was in the sales department is because the service center turned his oil change into a bill totaling $1018.44. They told him he wouldn’t need to pay for it if he bought a new car. That’s the whole reason they unnecessarily ran the bill up in the first place. They have been calling and emailing us for months trying to get our used car from us. How they ran his bill up: He had an appointment at 9 am on 10/10/2025 for an oil change. When he arrived, the attendant, Dante, checked him in and showed him to the waiting area. They then took his car back for the oil change. While they had it back there, Dante came to tell him all the things they found that he “needed”. The list was for: Engine Air Filter; $10, Rotate Tires $29.99, Perform Complete Fuel System Cleaning $369.99, Replace Front Wiper Blades $45, Replace Cabin Air Filter $44.99. Out of this list, he ONLY agreed to the Engine Air filter and tire rotation. He said no to everything else INCLUDING the fuel system cleaning because it was too expensive there. Also, they should never have tried to get him to buy wiper blades because my husband had just replaced them not even 2 weeks prior to that appointment. Dante then went to tell the mechanics no on the extras. Dante then comes back to my son to inform him that the mechanics say his car suddenly won’t start and that he needs to buy a new battery because the battery is bad and they could jump it, but it will probably die on his way somewhere else. This is a flat out lie but my son trusted them to tell the truth. The battery was not bad. It had not been experiencing any starting issues and drove there just fine. They battery was only “bad” AFTER he declined the other expensive extras. He then agreed to buy a new battery because he believed them and agreed to the lifetime battery that was $40 more. Meanwhile a salesperson has gotten a hold of him and saying how he won’t need to pay for repairs if he sells his car to them. He called me to ask for help after they had talked him into running his credit and he felt like something was wrong. I came there and asked to talk to a manager. The Service Lane manager Ben Albright took me to his office where I proceeded to ask how my son ended up having to buy a battery when all he needed was an oil change and why they offered him services he clearly didn’t need such as replacing already new windshield wipers. Ben was extremely unprofessional telling me that the issues I had with their service “wasn’t his problem” and that he “could show me the video of the service” (this is something they are supposed to provide at every service anyway but this time my son never received it) I said okay, and then he told me Id have to wait 24 hours to see it. I said fine, let’s pay the bill and get my son out of here for now. I paid the $1018.44 bill thinking we could sort it out once the video came in. I left and ran some other errands but realized that Ben never asked where he could send the video, so I went back at around 4:00pm that day. I walked in and asked Dante if I could give him my email for them to send the video and he said that he could get Ben to come take it. There is more but there is a word limit. Hopefully I can post a part 2. More
Part 2: While waiting for Ben to come over I was getting Dante to clarify how this oil change ended up so expensive. This is when I found out from Dante that my son had declined the fuel system cleaning, bu Dante to clarify how this oil change ended up so expensive. This is when I found out from Dante that my son had declined the fuel system cleaning, but was charged anyway. At this point Ben was arriving and I told him that I wanted to give him my information for him to send the video but I had a question about the battery because that still didn’t make sense. I asked, “Is it possible that the mechanics left the lights on during service and that’s why his car wouldn’t start?” Ben then said that he didn’t appreciate me accusing his guys of something like that so he would no longer be servicing our cars and wanted me trespassed. So, he proceeded to call 911 as I was gathering my papers and leaving. I take appropriate use of emergency services very seriously and this was not an emergency. There is a NON-emergency number for that sort of thing as I do understand a business can trespass you for simply looking at them funny and they don’t need a reason. I was not yelling, screaming, damaging, or threatening anyone. I simply asked a question trying to solve an issue with the business like any person would given these circumstances. I have done everything I could to work directly with the business but they refused to work with me and had me trespassed. I then filed a complaint with Toyota Corp. Spartanburg Toyota responded to corporate that they did not have to work with me because they trespassed me. I then found out that they are owned by Hudson Automotive Group NOT Toyota Corporate, so I filed a complaint with Hudson. They still refuse to do anything to remedy their wrongdoing. I do not think it is fair for them to charge us for a service we declined and for a battery they killed and on top of that to refuse to honor the lifetime warranty on the battery they tricked my son into buying. There are multiple reviews on Spartanburg Toyota with similar issues to the point where the AI summary is overwhelmingly negative and includes the exact issues I experienced. Following one of the “tips for service” is what got me trespassed which is honestly ridiculous as I am a 5’3” female. I have copied and pasted the AI overview below. I can only fit most of the AI overview since there is a word limit but I included what matters. Spartanburg Toyota service reviews show a mix, with common complaints about hidden fees, upselling unnecessary repairs, price gouging (especially post-Dave Edwards ownership), poor communication (unreturned calls, long waits), lost items (keys), and issues with out-of-state tags/paperwork, leading to distrust; however, some customers praise specific staff (like Chris Shear, Bill Ledbetter) for professionalism, quick service, and honesty, with recent positive reviews mentioning good communication and timely repairs after ownership changes. Common Complaints (Negative) Financial Issues: Unexpected charges, inflated prices, added fees without consent, attempts to pressure into costly add-ons (e.g., market adjustments, loan interest). Unnecessary Repairs: Recommendations for extensive work (batteries, belts) that seem sudden or excessive, leading to distrust. Customer Service: Rude staff, unreturned calls, difficulty reaching anyone, feeling harassed, lack of accountability, long waits for scheduled service. Process & Paperwork: Problems with temporary tags for out-of-state buyers, lost keys, denial of issues (like brake squeal). Ownership Change Impact: Many negative reviews cite a drop in quality and ethics after new management (post-Dave Edwards era). The sentiment is polarized; recent reviews show some improvement and praise for specific employees and better communication, but significant underlying customer frustration with billing, transparency, and trust issues persists, especially regarding the service department's sales tactics and handling of complex issues. Purchase new RAV 4 in August. The Finance guy raked us over the coals for extended warranties. It was degrading. We were adamant that we DID NOT WANT ANY EXTENDED WARRANTY. My father and I purchased a vehicle from Spartanburg Toyota in April 2025. While our salesman Stas was kind and helpful during the purchase, everything after the sale has been a complete nightmare — and Toyota in April 2025. While our salesman Stas was kind and helpful during the purchase, everything after the sale has been a complete nightmare — and it all stems from a mistake that Spartanburg Toyota made. We were very clear at the time of purchase that although our address may populate as Pulaski County, we legally reside in Houston County, Georgia and register all vehicles there. Knowing this would likely confuse things, we specifically signed the paperwork for Houston County to make it absolutely clear. Despite this, the dealership submitted our title paperwork to Pulaski County — a critical error that they have still not corrected. We are now nearing four months with no resolution. Our title is still missing, and we are on our third temporary tag, which expires August 10. At this point, we have no guarantee we’ll be able to drive our car legally once that date passes — and we’re the ones stuck chasing down answers for their mistake. I called the salesman on May 22 for an update, and was simply told to “just give it time.” But we’ve since found out the paperwork had already been sent to the wrong county almost a month earlier, and no one ever informed us. That’s time we could have used to fix the issue if someone had actually followed up. The title clerk at Spartanburg Toyota has been incredibly difficult to work with. She has ignored multiple emails, failed to follow through on what she said she would do, and is automatically defensive any time we ask questions — even when she’s clearly in the wrong. She has been unfriendly, unhelpful, and dismissive throughout this entire process. We’re the ones who were wronged, and yet the dealership acts like they’re doing us a favor by fixing their own error — which still hasn’t been fixed. We’ve now had to escalate this with our financing company and are filing official complaints with both South Carolina and Georgia consumer protection agencies. We purchased this car in good faith, and now we’re stuck in a legal mess through no fault of our own. If you're buying from Spartanburg Toyota — especially if you're from out of state — be extremely careful. The sale might be smooth, but if something goes wrong afterward, you’ll be left on your own with no accountability, no transparency, and no urgency from their staff. More
Everyone is so rude. Will never go back. Tony Macena and Bill Ledbetter was the only nice ones. I am tired of trying to call about my warranty. I have been trying to call Will never go back. When we took the car for an oil change and tire rotation, they gave us the estimated cost as around $45. Without notifying us and without our consent, they added several extra fees to more than double the cost of our bill. When we asked about these fees, they refused to remove them and demanded that we pay them. I am highly dissatisfied with their deceitfulness and poor customer service. I strongly recommend that no one use their services. More
