There were several instances where business ethics were violated. Front line people mostly OK, but manager and financial person were not. (1) The cost estimate presented in paper form in person was $2,500 violated. Front line people mostly OK, but manager and financial person were not. (1) The cost estimate presented in paper form in person was $2,500 higher than that on the car's window sticker and the cost specified for this specific vehicle on the dealership web page. (2) At one point in the negotiation a second paper form was presented where the bottom-most line reflected an agreed-upon value, but the next line above reflected a $2,000 down payment by the buyer, meaning that the actual car cost was still $2,000 than the agreed-upon value. This manner of presentation clearly was meant to confuse the buyer into believing that the agreed-upon value was met. (3) In the financial agreement portion, among a couple dozen of forms there was presented a page with six extended-warranty options. But the vehicle already has a 3-year warranty from Toyota and the default of using this without any additional coverage was not presented as an option to the buyer. Moreover, the costs of each extended option was not given as the actual monetary value, but instead as the monthly payment on top of the loan that would be in place with the warranty option in place. This manner of presentation was clearly meant to obscure the real cost incurred with each option. By my estimates, the first warranty option would have incurred a cost to the buyer of approximately $10,000. (4) Somehow the entire process still took 4 hours even though we came in knowing the exact vehicle we were looking to buy (there was only 1 of that time on the lot), we had all the necessary paperwork on hand, our high credit rating made everything easy, etc. It almost seemed that the process was intentionally delayed so as to tire the buyer into being not-very-attentive to the financial slips-of-hand that were described above. The dealership area was clean. The new car was clean. The front-line salesperson was helpful and friendly. The financial person was very competent and efficient. I bought a Corolla Cross and had to wait a couple of months to actually get the car. Dan Maher kept me updated the whole time and couldn't have been more accommodating throughout the process.
