We purchased a 2017 Chevy Trax from Jim Norton T Town Tulsa. Exactly seven days later the check engine light came on for a turbo under-boost condition. We scheduled the repair (covered by GM) for two day Tulsa. Exactly seven days later the check engine light came on for a turbo under-boost condition. We scheduled the repair (covered by GM) for two days later. On the way to the appointment the vehicle completely shut off while driving. I restarted it, drove about 100 feet, and it died again. This repeated until I had to push it off the roadway. I called the dealership directly, explained we already had a service appointment scheduled, and requested a tow. Once there we explained the symptoms and I asked for the freeze-frame data. The service manager initially claimed he couldn't pull it. When I pressed him he admitted the technician had the tool, so I demanded a copy. My suspicion was that they had cleared a code before we took possession; the light appeared right at the one drive cycle mark after purchase. They provided a free loaner. The next day they called to say the vehicle was ready. Service manager Don told us it was "just the coil packs" and that they had tightened a ground wire that was supposedly causing misfires in all four cylinders. That explanation does not hold up. He attached the freeze-frame data to the invoice. We drove home. The light was off, but the car was still struggling and hesitating to accelerate, and the turbo was making a noise consistent with a loose shaft or similar mechanical issue. Reviewing the freeze-frame data confirmed they had cleared the code before we took possession in an attempt to hide the problem. I emailed the general manager with the evidence. He offered to replace the turbo and let us drive it another seven days "to see if we still wanted it." We declined. At that point my wife was afraid to drive the vehicle, and it appeared they were simply trying to push us past the bank's funding window. They ultimately agreed to void the contract and return our down payment. The situation was resolved in the end, but the fact that a well-known dealership engaged in this kind of conduct to sell a vehicle is unacceptable. Buyer beware. I will now regularly request freeze-frame data when evaluating used vehicles. Stay away if you value transparency and honesty. More
