I brought my car in because some warning lights came on during my travels. Initially, I took a look at the vehicle manual to see what the lights meant. All of them had the description of “Bring vehicle t during my travels. Initially, I took a look at the vehicle manual to see what the lights meant. All of them had the description of “Bring vehicle to a Toyota dealer” which was no help to me. Then I stopped at a NAPA Auto Parts to have them check the code for me for free. Their system showed it as a “Inverter Cooling System Performance” code. After looking online, it was recommended that I do not drive too much more with this error as it could be related to an Inverter Water Pump Failure (which can lead to dangerous overheating). Unfortunately NAPA did not have the part available and I was in need of getting the vehicle repaired asap, so I took it to the nearest Toyota which was this Westborough location. They were kind enough to take it in quickly and run their diagnostic test (which they charge a ridiculous $165 for and you can only avoid if you proceed to have the vehicle serviced with them and it is $165 or more for the service). After the diagnostic test the service technician, Juan, told me that they would need to do an “HV Water Pump Assembly” replacement for $713. No price breakdown was given or information about what the issue was with the assembly currently. I proceeded to ask him for a breakdown of the cost. He told me the part was $206.45, two bottles of coolant for $26 each, $412.50 in labor charges (2.5 hours billed), $25.78 in shop charges, and $16.15 tax! Immediately I was alarmed by this number and told him I would need to do some research. After looking online for about 10-minutes, I found that the part was actually $179.52 from Toyota Parts Center Online (the company’s own site), most people said labor should be between $100 - $200 with the labor hours being 0.5 min - 1.2 max (some people even said they did their own replacement in under 30-minutes. In addition, I found out from my father who previously owned of the car that the same part was replaced before due to recall by Toyota (however they didn’t provide a warranty for this) and when it was replaced, the labor hours billed was 1.1-hours!!! I brought all of this information to Juan and asked for an explanation. He made a call and got the part cost corrected to $180 but told me that he could not change the 2.5-hours of labor billed because it “is what Toyota bills”. Then I even showed him my previous service receipt stating the 1.1-hours. He spoke to his service manager and told me that “Toyota Warranty Services bills differently than Toyota Service so the amount cannot be change”. I was shocked by this and very upset to hear that this company would allow such a thing. Absolutely disgusting to hear of the price gouging which goes on at Toyota dealerships. Unfortunately this was not the first time this has happened as I also need to have my hybrid battery replaced in the past. During that instance, Toyota quoted me at $5500 but after going to another car repair shop who called that Toyota Service location to get pricing details (and call them out on their price gouging), they came down to $2300!!! I cannot even imagine how many innocent vehicle owners get mistreated and scammed like this by Toyota Service centers all over the country. It is a disgusting business practice and truly a disappointment that a company so highly regarded in the auto industry would resort to such mistreatment in order to make money. On a separate but related note, the service technician Juan was kind enough to get me in quickly, answer my questions, and even offered my wife and I “$5 tokens” to use at the cafe inside (which unfortunately closed 5-minutes later). However, he did not really provide me with good information as to why the price he quoted for the part was almost $27 more than it should have been, he was clearly hesitant to speak with his service manager in regard to the labor hour discrepancy, and he did not check on my wife and I once during the service time (which was 2 hours). Nowadays the service costs at Westboro Toyota is comparable to other service agencies. Juan took care to ensure that all tests are conducted to keep my plug-in Prius roadworthy. At the end one of th comparable to other service agencies. Juan took care to ensure that all tests are conducted to keep my plug-in Prius roadworthy. At the end one of the reps took extra care to check out the display screen and its functions. Though the display was not upgraded as there are still more improvements being worked on, I was shown the method of upgrading the system through the website whenever I was ready to do so. That was very helpful. More
