Terrible experience with this service department. I spent 32 years in the Army as a maintenance manager/technician with ASE certifications in the AUTO/MED/Heavy Duty Truck fields. My wife traveled ou I spent 32 years in the Army as a maintenance manager/technician with ASE certifications in the AUTO/MED/Heavy Duty Truck fields. My wife traveled out of state to Ohio to visit a friend. One morning as she was on a trip her check engine light came on. She immediately called me for guidance. I asked if she had any noticeable drivability issues, and she said no. I had her contact OnStar so they could run a remote diagnostic. I received an email showing an ECM diagnostic trouble code (DTC) of P0024, which relates to the camshaft VVT solenoid. I contacted this dealership and set up an appt. for 1:00pm the same day. My wife took the OnStar email with her and showed it to the service rep Edgar. The email showed the DTC P0024 linked to an ECM fault, which is the correct module. Shortly after dropping off the vehicle Edgar texted my wife that the ECM needed to be replaced. My wife contacted me, and I immediately called Edgar as I knew this could not be correct. I asked Edgar what additional DTCs led them to believe the ECM was defective? He stated two other DTCs were found: U0073 and U2098. I looked up those DTCs while Edgar was on the phone and told him those DTCs pertained to the communication bus and media control, which have nothing to do with the ECM. He said he would have to look into it. I immediately called and spoke with the service manager Mike. I told him in my 32 years of experience I could count on one hand the number of bad ECMs I had seen during that time and there was no way the ECM was bad. I told Mike that based on my research I was certain the fault was with the camshaft VVT solenoid. Mike said he would have his shop foreman look at my vehicle. The next morning Mike called me back and said that the ECM was bad. I told him that I did not believe that and asked what was the cause? He said there was high resistance on the ECM during the test. I had the GM diagnostic procedure pulled up, so I had him verify again that it was high resistance and he said yes. I told him the repair procedures clearly state to repair the wire and not replace the ECM for high resistance. He said he would get the technician for me to speak with. Mike came back on the phone and changed the ECM failure to low resistance. I told him I don’t believe the ECM is bad and asked him what the scan tool readout was when they tested the camshaft VVT solenoids. Mike said he did not have that information. I told him he was not authorized to make any repairs on my vehicle and that my wife would pick it up. As a service manager I would expect Mike to use common sense and perform some research regarding this matter. When a customer brings in a vehicle that exhibits NO drivability issues at all, there is no way the ECM has failed. When my wife picked up the vehicle the check engine light was off. She drove the vehicle for about 2 ½ hours that same day, and then for over 8 hours coming back home with no issues. It must be a miracle to drive for over 10 ½ hours with a bad ECM and have no drivability issues. Had Mike or either of the technicians that worked on my vehicle done a little research they would have found a GM bulletin that pertained to my exact engine on other vehicle platforms that may set DTCs P0011, P0014, P0021 and P0024 with no drivability concerns. GMs own corrective actions for this fault consisted of these 3 steps: Clear the codes and return the vehicle to the customer. At this time the cause for this concern is under investigation. Please do not replace any parts for the concern at this time. I have zero confidence in the service department at this dealership to adequately diagnose and repair customer vehicles. The reason for my bad ECM changed every time I challenged either Edgar or Mike. I was charged $14.99 for some unexplained shop charge. Just another way to gouge the customer while rendering completely useless services. More
