Buyer beware Free advice to those considering purchasing from Glenbrook: 1) Be on guard. 2) Take any and all verbal employee statements with a grain of salt. 3) Free advice to those considering purchasing from Glenbrook: 1) Be on guard. 2) Take any and all verbal employee statements with a grain of salt. 3) Get absolutely everything in writing. 4) Read any paperwork completely and thoroughly before exchanging any money. On October 8th, 2018, I visited Glenbrook Dodge Chrysler Jeep with interest in purchasing a used 2013 Toyota Highlander Hybrid for sale on their lot. I was impressed by the vehicle after a short test drive and was soon sitting down with one of their salesmen. The typical back-and-forth ensued. My main hesitancy to purchasing a used hybrid vehicle centered around the increased opportunity for expensive repairs to the hybrid components and the potential for the hybrid batteries to fail. Because of this, I asked the salesman whether I could purchase an extended warranty that covered this vehicle, mentioning my hybrid-specific concerns. He assured me that Glenbrook offered literally any type of service contract (what I'd incorrectly called a warranty) I'd want but that service contracts were administered through their Finance Department who I'd be able to talk to after coming to an agreement on a purchase price of the vehicle. The salesman's assurance that I would have the opportunity to purchase a service contract that covered this vehicle was integral to both my decision to make an offer and my decision to proceed in the process. I wrote a purchase price on a page of paper which the salesman took to his manager. After agreeing on a price, I went to see the Finance Manager. I quickly asked about warranties/service agreements and the importance of having one due to the aforementioned increased opportunity for expensive repairs to the hybrid components and the potential for the hybrid batteries to fail. The Finance Manager resonated with my concerns and even offered that he had been previously employed by Toyota and knew firsthand how expensive ($6,000) the hybrid batteries were to replace. After hearing my concerns, he recommended a $2,800 bumper-to-bumper MOPAR service contract. I asked specifically whether this 18-page contract covered my vehicle's hybrid components and batteries. He responded by telling me the contract covered the vehicle bumper-to-bumper and specifically noted that it covered anything electrical. The night was getting late and I decided not to read the entire service contract before purchasing it and the vehicle, due to the Finance Manager's confident assurance of my vehicle's coverage. I purchased both the vehicle and the service contact that night. This was my mistake. The following week, I was able to read the service contract cover-to-cover. Much to my surprise, buried within the thickness of the document, were two lines of text that specifically excluded the hybrid components and the hybrid batteries from coverage--not to mention a line that seemingly excluded the vehicle itself from coverage due to the fact that it was a hybrid (I'm still not confident anyone at Glenbrook nor MOPAR knows whether the vehicle itself should have been excluded from service contract eligibility due to it being a hybrid). I contacted Glenbrook on October 18, 2018 with hope their team would be able to rectify the situation. I purchased the vehicle based on Glenbrook's Salesman's word that I would be able to purchase a service contract that fit my needs and their Finance Manager's word that the hybrid components and batteries were covered under the service contract I purchased. I persistently attempted to resolve this for more than three weeks with their Finance Manager and their General Sales Manager. After more than 25 calls to Glenbrook, nearly a month of back-and-forth and lots of waiting, the General Sales Manager told me today he is only willing to refund my purchase of the service contract to rectify the situation. (The terms of the service contract allow me to cancel it myself within 60 days, so I'm not sure this is any concession on their end.) The Finance Manager had earlier mentioned the potential for and likelihood of the dealership writing me a partial refund of the vehicle's purchase price, but the General Manager apparently nixed this option. Truthfully, I'd rather just cancel the entire transaction, return the vehicle, and act like none of this ever happened; that's not an option either, according to the General Sales Manager. The return and refund of the service contract does not resolve the fact that I offered to purchase the vehicle based on the salesman's confirmation I'd be able to purchase the service contract I wanted and the Finance Manager's assurance that it covered both the hybrid components and hybrid batteries. I purchased the vehicle after trusting the word of two employees at Glenbrook. I have no reason to believe either employee intentionally lied to me; however, it is blatantly apparent neither were remotely familiar with the specifics of products they were selling. The dealership's General Sales Manager has no interest to reconcile either his employees offering misinformation or the fast that I am now stuck with a vehicle that was misrepresented to me as vehicle whose most fragile systems and components were fully covered by my purchased service contract. Since I don’t have his employees’ assurances in writing and did not specifically make my purchase contingent on their words being truthful, Glenbrook refuses to stand behind their employees statements or fix the situation that came as a result of me believing them. That’s shameful. More
