Seller's Comments
1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 In the world of muscle cars, there are few names that get people more excited than Chevrolet Chevelle. When you add the Super Sport 396 name to that, it elevates it to true legend status. This 1968 Chevelle SS396 is a true 138 VIN meaning that it started life as a Super Sport, and it retains its numbers matching L35 396 ci V8. Built in March, 1968, this Chevelle was first sold through a dealership in Cawker City, KS where it was delivered in Ermine White over a black interior and equipped with a Muncie M20 4-speed manual gearbox. Believed to be a very original car, the first owner held on to this Chevelle until 1999 and since then, it has been under the care of just 3 more owners. The Ermine White exterior of this car is in very good condition- especially considering how original it is. Optioned with the Super Sport trim package, this Chevelle came from the factory with an aggressive looking domed hood with twin hood scoops, black painted rocker panels with bright moldings and the infamous SS badging in both the font and rear of the car. The car is rolling on a set of Chevrolet's classic Rallye wheels- which on this car are fitted with absolutely period perfect Firestone Redline tires. The interior on this Chevelle is particularly interesting for the true General Motors enthusiast- demarcated by trim code 178 on the Protect-O-Plate, this car has the interior out of a Buick. Due to supply issues at the factory, a small number of Chevelles were actually fitted with Buick interiors which, although not tremendously different, the design of the stitching has changed, they are of higher quality and give you a great talking point at any car show. Sitting on the steering column is a dealer installed tachometer, and a beautiful console with brushed stainless trim sits between the front bucket seats. What makes this Chevelle truly stand out is the 396 ci V8 under the hood. This numbers matching L35 code engine is rated at 325 horsepower and is topped by a Quadrajet 4bbl carburetor and the one year only single snorkel chrome air cleaner. Backing up this engine is a tough Muncie M20 4-speed manual gearbox-also numbers matching- with the correct Muncie branded chrome shift lever. Power is then sent to the rear wheels through a 12-bolt rear end with 3.31 rear gears that offer a perfect combination of acceleration and cruising performance. In light of how original this example appears to be, it will be no surprise that it has been featured in numerous publications over the years. In March 2009, this car was written about in the Muscle Car Review a copy of which is included with the sale. Additionally, this car was included in Chevelle SS 1964-1972 resource book which came out in 2011- a copy of this will also come with the sale. The fact that this car is in demand for such serious enthusiast publications really goes to show how special of an example it is. In the classic car world, they say that a car is only original once and in
