Thank you for your review. As discussed, due to the excessive oil change intervals, BMW declined any warranty repairs on this vehicle. Had the maintenance been properly completed BMW would have warrantied a good percentage of the cost. Regretfully as the dealer, we do not hold authority to approve/decline the manufacturers warranty decisions. We did petition on your behalf but were declined. We are very sorry to lose your business especially after so many decades of reliable service but this isn’t an outcome we can control. HI Clay, Thank you for your response. I appreciate the opportunity to address each of the items you raise: 1. Warranty - I contacted BMW Corp. and not once did they raise the question about oil change interval. It was simply that the Extended Warranty was past the 2 years. Even if it was one month past, they said they wouldn't honor the Extended Warranty. My X3 is well past the OEM and Extended Warranty on this N20 engine. My contention is that BMW knows this engine is junk and stopped development and selling of it after it was used for only a few years. They should stand behind their product! 2. Oil Change Interval - I mentioned that the oil had been changed based on the BMW Recommendation for the vehicle at the time it was mfgered. I stick by this. There is NO research by BMW which indicates that going past 10,000 miles (by as little as 100 miles as your SA claimed) suddenly results in the Timing Chain's cheap plastic guide rails failing and the Timing Chain stretching beyond specs. Talk to any reputable engine engineer or BMW mechanic. I will be pleased to have a sample of the X3 oil, at my cost, sent to a Forensic Engineering Lab and have it analyzed. I believe that the oil will show particles of the cheap plastic guide rails which indicates another failure of what BMW has known for years and the Class Action lawsuit proved. 3. N20 BMW Engine - BMW has dropped this engine after only a few years of production. I have NEVER known BMW to drop an engine so quickly. It was replaced by the B46/48 engine which has a new design Timing Chain, Guide Rails, Sprockets, and related parts, and the entire engine has been redesigned with the Timing Chain in the rear. It is much quieter and appears to be a more reliable engine so far. I have that engine in 2 other BMW vehicles I own. If the N20 was so reliable, then why wouldn't BMW continue to develop it after spending $$$$ for the initial development?? BMW should stand behind their engineering decisions. By dropping the engine so quickly is a public statement that they don't believe in the N20 engine either! They sold a lemon and know it! 4. Replacement Engine - I strongly believe that the replacement engine that Baron BMW installed was not a new engine but a Refurbished Engine and has the same design parts as the original N20 engine that came in my X3; and NOT the newer designed replacement parts. This engine was replaced before the lawsuit was finalized and new parts were designed, I believe. It is very easy to determine the difference between the original and redesigned parts once the engine has been taken apart and the Timing Chain and related parts removed. 5. Challenge Offer - I am willing to offer you a challenge.....Let's split the cost, and we'll send out the oil for a detailed analysis. If the oil comes back that it meets specs, then you pay for the entire repair. If the oil comes back that it has deterioated beyond the allowed specs for this engine, then I'll pay for the entire repair PLUS I'll send 5 of your employees to dinner at a nice restaurant on the Plaza AND I will also commit to you that my next BMW will come from your dealership AND my other BMW's will continue to be serviced at Baron BMW. That is how confident I am about my position that the N20 engine is a piece of junk, BMW knows this, and should stand behind their engine even though internally they have scrapped it in favor of the new B series engine, and that my more than adequate oil change interval has nothing to do with its premature failure at 36,000 miles. Let me know if you are up to the challenge. Put your money where your mouth is. You have my contact information.
