The ent Below you will see a critical and in-depth review of my experience working with Ron Carter Hyundai of Clear Lake for the last year and a half. The entire experience has been less then desirable, and I couldn’t possibly bring myself to recommending this place to anyone for the purchase or maintenance of a Hyundai vehicle. I decided to purchase my first new vehicle, and after significant research, I had elected for the 2016 Hyundai Elantra Limited with the Tech Package. This gave me the best of all worlds, and I was happy with my selection. The vehicle has been running great, good mileage, comfortable, and all the bells and whistles I could want. In terms of happiness with my purchase, I would give it 5 stars, 100%, and suggest that anyone trying to get a compact car to try out a Hyundai. The exterior is slick, and the interior is so intentional. It seems like they thought of everything when it came to putting this car together! Unfortunately, my experience with the dealership itself, Ron Carter Hyundai of Clear Lake, really soured my experience with purchasing my new vehicle. Very little has gone well, from the moment I stated I wanted to purchase a vehicle through the last 18 months of maintenance. When I had come in previously to get some questions answered, I worked with Mo Shurafa. He was a good guy, patient, and really wanted to put me at ease with the car buying process. He was competent and could say he didn’t know an answer to a question, which I can respect. It happened that there was a family emergency on the day that I wanted to purchase, and I was shuffled off to another salesperson. This lady, whose name I can’t recall, was nowhere near the same level of competent as Mo. At the beginning of our interaction, I informed her of what Mo and I had accomplished the last time, and said I was ready to go through the buying process. Even having been told this, she went through and rehashed everything that Mo and I had discussed, attempting to renegotiate and tack on extra products. I tried to let her know that I had already decided exactly what I wanted, and I didn’t want anything extra. At that point, she brought over another salesman who attempted to upsell me on more of these products to a point that I was getting frustrated with why I couldn’t just buy the car as I had decided previously. After these renegotiations, I was informed that they would have to send my car in from another dealer after I completed the purchase. I accepted this and made my payment of the vehicle through their financing office. In their financing office, they conveniently decided to bring up gap insurance, prepaid maintenance, and extended warranties, all options that would add thousands of extra dollars to what I expected to be paying for my vehicle. At this point, I was tired and just wanted to get the last of this taken care of, and they exploited this fact. The financial worker reminded me that these items were refundable, so I could add it on and then think about it more once I left. I accepted this and tacked on all three products. Once returning to the lady salesperson with whom I was working, she enrolled me in Blue Link. This wasn’t a big deal, except that I didn’t want my credit card information in the program as I was simply going to discontinue it once I got home. However, she was persistent that I should enter this information to take advantage of the opportunity. Reluctantly, I allowed it so that I could just wrap this up and go home. Afterwards, this lady told me about the review that I needed to fill out after the purchase. She claimed that if I scored her anything less than a “5”, it would be viewed as a failure so I should make sure to do that. She even bribed me saying that if I gave her a perfect score, she would give me a full tank of gas the next time I came through. This sounded sketchy, but I also didn’t want this to reflect poorly on Mo, so I did as she asked. Finally, after all this extra work, frustration and moral qualm or rating someone higher than I felt was appropriate, I had purchased the vehicle, to be picked up later, and headed home. After doing some research and crunching numbers, I decided that I didn’t want to keep the gap coverage or extended warranty. I didn’t mind the maintenance package as that was already going to happen anyways. I returned to the dealership to request the refund on those items as I was offered. I was put with a different financial advisor, who then tried to convince me to not refund those products. I did my best to be respectful and state that I’ve already considered the consequences and stand by my decision, but the advisor simply wasn’t taking “no” for an answer. It got to the point where he started acting like I didn’t know what I was doing and asking “What if you drive out of here and blow out a tire? What are you going to do then?” I had to stop him there and say “I’m sorry, but right now I’m feeling a bit disrespected and don’t appreciate your attempts at making me feel incompetent and guilting me into backing out on this refund.” The advisor literally responding “Well, that’s my job!” and then didn’t say another word to me for the rest of the exchange. He sat there entering my information, had me sign, gave me a receipt, and gestured me to the door. When I asked when the refund would be processed, he told me to read the agreement to find out. Again, just an unpleasant experience where, if I had not been so confident going in, he would’ve likely berated me into not taking the refund. I think about others that wanted to get their money back being handled in that way, and it disgusts me. I fortunately managed to get that tank of gas, as promised. When I finally returned to pick up my car, I was kindly provided with some gift card incentives that came with the purchase of my new car. However, the lady salesperson was nowhere to be found. No one would comment, but it seemed as if she no longer worked there. I was then passed on to yet another salesman to go through the concluding process of getting my car. This makes four salespeople and two financial advisors that I had been bounced around to in this single purchase. Shortly after receiving my car, the interior tint started bubbling up. I informed them, and they were quite responsive in getting my car in, getting me a loaner vehicle, and having me come back the next day. The loaner vehicle was dirty, smelly, and must have just come from another customer (there were still glasses and other personal belongings in the car). I didn’t expect much, but it was a bit disappointing. Since then, stopping in for maintenance has been a mess. Even when scheduling an appointment and showing up early, I’m consistently there for 2-3 hours, waiting on my vehicle. When I asked for a loaner vehicle so that I could at least do some shopping, I was denied because it needs to be requested in advance. I don’t think it’s realistic for me to know that it’s going to take 2-3 hours to just get an oil change. I’m then stuck with the frustration that despite my attempts to avoid rush hour, I would now be stuck right in the middle of it due to their delay. They would then ask me at the end of I’d like a complimentary car wash, and I had to stop myself from laughing when they say it’ll take only an extra 20-30 minutes. One time, I even found the grate and two fasteners of my cabin filter in my passenger seat. They had literally forgotten to put them back on before returning the vehicle to me. There was a sealed bottle of water left in my car, but if it was supposed to be for more or one of the workers had left, I’ll never know. In conclusion, the inconsistency of customer service, being tossed back and forth, and being pushed into products that I didn’t desire, turned this potentially exciting and momentous occasion of my first vehicle purchase into a headache that I reflect on and get depressed about. I’ve since started working with another dealership whom have treated me as significant and respected my wishes. When Ron Carter Hyundai of Clear Lake claims to be the “#1 Volume Hyundai Dealer in Texas”, that’s what you can expect. A dealer that is going to try to make as much money off you as possible, pass you around, and not be bothered because they have numerous other clients that they can also be taking advantage of. If you’re looking for a Hyundai, it’s a great vehicle and I believe you’ll be happy, but PLEASE consider going somewhere other than Ron Carter Hyundai of Clear Lake. I just would hate for anyone else to go through that same experience. More
