The individual was friendly, helpful and seemed to be genuinely interested in getting the matter attended to as swiftly as possible. Bad Diagnosis on Faulty Instrument Cluster I took in a 2004 Ford Focus with less than 50K miles to have the instrument cluster diagnosed. The cluster's operation was intermittent and I suspecte I took in a 2004 Ford Focus with less than 50K miles to have the instrument cluster diagnosed. The cluster's operation was intermittent and I suspected it would need to be replaced. However, the service department did the diagnosis and told me the problem was not a bad instrument cluster, but was being caused by the alternator which needed to be replaced. And oh, by the way, the diagnosis also showed that the fuel pump was ready to go out and also needed to be replaced. The estimate for both was north of $1500. I declined their offer and had the alternator and fuel pump replaced by a local automotive care center for less than 60% of Utter's quote. Unfortunately, the new alternator did not fix the instrument cluster problem. So back to square 1 for the problem with the instrument cluster. But, looking at the glass as half-full instead of half-empty, I now have a new alternator and fuel pump which I may not have needed. More
