Major Problems Within Days – 11+ Repair Visits, $28,000+ in Repairs, and Ultimately a Replacement Engine I purchased a used 2018 Honda Accord Sport from Burlington Chevrolet on July 28, 2025. Unfortunately in Repairs, and Ultimately a Replacement Engine I purchased a used 2018 Honda Accord Sport from Burlington Chevrolet on July 28, 2025. Unfortunately, it turned into one of the most costly and frustrating vehicle purchases I have experienced. Within approximately one week, the car began experiencing acceleration problems and multiple warning lights. By August 9, it was displaying 8–10 simultaneous system warnings, and we stopped driving it because of safety concerns. On August 11, a Honda dealership diagnosed major engine-related problems, including a head gasket issue, timing-chain components, and likely fuel injector failure. The initial recommended repairs totaled nearly $12,000. I contacted Burlington Chevrolet the next day, August 12, less than two weeks after purchasing the car, and asked to return it because of the seriousness of the problems. That was only the beginning. Over the following year, the Accord had at least 11 separate service visits involving the head gasket, fuel injectors, repeated misfires and air/fuel issues, spark plug and valve work, VTC-related repairs, electrical faults and warning lights, extensive diagnostics, a wiring-harness replacement, and ultimately a complete engine replacement. One repair period alone, from approximately April 20 through June 15, 2026, lasted about 56 days. The vehicle was unavailable to us while the wiring-harness problem was diagnosed and repaired. That repair cost approximately $2,700 and was not covered by the warranty, so we paid the entire amount out of pocket. The most recent repair bill exceeded $5,300 and included replacement of the engine. Approximately $600 was for brakes and rotors, which I consider normal wear items and do not attribute to Burlington Chevrolet. By my current accounting, more than $28,000 has been spent between the warranty company and me repairing this vehicle. More than $8,000 has come directly out of my own pocket, in addition to the monthly car payment and insurance we continued paying throughout this ordeal. I want to be fair. This was a higher-mileage used vehicle sold as-is, and I understand that used vehicles require repairs and maintenance. My concern is that serious engine problems appeared within days of purchase, I notified Burlington almost immediately, and what followed went far beyond ordinary maintenance. The dealership’s General Manager later offered to work with me on a trade-in and replacement vehicle. We ultimately decided instead to continue repairing the Accord, eventually replacing the engine in the hope of finally having a reliable vehicle. After the engine replacement, I contacted Burlington again, provided a detailed summary of the history, and asked whether they would consider making a reasonable goodwill contribution toward the engine replacement expense. I received no response. I cannot say what Burlington Chevrolet knew or did not know about the vehicle when it was sold. I can only describe what happened afterward: major problems within days, notification to the dealership less than two weeks after purchase, at least 11 service visits, substantial periods without the vehicle, more than $28,000 in cumulative repairs, more than $8,000 personally out of pocket, and ultimately a complete engine replacement. Prospective used-car buyers can decide for themselves what they think of that experience. I have retained the purchase documents, repair orders, invoices, warranty records, and correspondence supporting the history described above. More
