One common tactic is claiming that your financing couldn’t be approved at the interest rate you were originally pre-approved for. They may call or text you saying something like, “We’ve been working hard to secure your loan, but we couldn’t get it approved at that rate—however, we can offer a higher interest rate.” At that point, if you say you’d rather return the car, they may suddenly reverse course and agree to honor the original rate. If you hadn’t started walking away, you could have ended up signing a deal at the higher rate and paying thousands more in interest. If you confront them about yo-yo financing, they may shift tactics and pressure you into signing to “finalize” the deal, arguing that you already signed the purchase agreement. When challenged further, they may claim that because they eventually “honored” the original deal, the financing terms technically didn’t change—despite the fact that they initially attempted to push you into a higher rate. Be aware of practices like “yo-yo financing” and spot delivery deals. If possible, do not take the car home until financing is fully approved and finalized.
