I believe this was to try to get me Long story. Two main things I had issues with: - Tire tread wear was exaggerated substantially in the inspection. I believe this was to try to get me to buy all new tires. - The $150 inspection cost was supposed to be applicable to any service carried out. They didn't follow through on this. The following is a paraphrase of interactions spanning 3 in-person visits and a handful of phone calls: Me: My vehicle is shaking a bit and pulling to the right. Service Rep: You will need to have a $150 inspection done. This $150 can be used towards repairs if you do repairs here. --- paid for inspection Service Rep: One tire has a bubble and needs to be replaced. The other three tires have a tread depth of 3-4. You should replace all 4, costing around $1000 with alignment Me: What does that tread depth mean? Service Rep: 3/32 or 4/32 of an inch. They start at 10/32 and definitely need to be replaced at 2/32. Me (after some research): The mileage on these tires is low. The tread shouldn't have worn so fast. Service Rep: You can call Michelin, the tire manufacturer, about that. --- A handful of conversations with Michelin. Finally, Michelin calls Jim Ellis for a direct tire report, which is a requirement for their claim process. Jim Ellis doesn't mention the tread depth at all. They only mention that customer must have hit something to get a bubble in their tire. --- Costco has cheaper tires and better warranty so I wanted to get new tires there. They later report tire tread depth between 5/32 and 6/32 (compared to 3/32 and 4/32 from Jim Ellis) Me: If I only do wheel alignment here, can I use the $150 inspection fee towards that. Service Rep: No, only if you buy tires here and have them done here. Me: What? Why? Is that written anywhere? You never mentioned this before. Can you explain exactly what services the inspection fee can be used towards? --- I never got any sensible answer to this I ended up getting the tires replaced at Costco and the alignment done back at Jim Ellis. I got some money off the inspection after emailing Service Department Manager Brandon Colon, which was helpful -- Thanks Brandon! But I still was never able to use the inspection fee towards the alignment--I had to pay for the full alignment. More
