Just terrible. They immediately tried to tack on 5 grand in fees without saying anything. Rather than show the total price of the vehicle for the first offer, they They immediately tried to tack on 5 grand in fees without saying anything. Rather than show the total price of the vehicle for the first offer, they only showed the monthly payment, likely hoping I would be uninformed and not blink at the high monthly that made no sense given the list price of the car. When asked why the monthly was so high, Ed claimed it due was a 3995 “recondition” fee and a 995 destination fee that had not previously been mentioned. Initially, he claimed the reconditioning fee was for work that had already been done on the car and that the service team could give us those details later on after we’ve closed. Later when pressed again on the fee, he said it was to cover any work that might have to be done and thats why they couldn’t show a service record. He also insisted this was standard in the New Jersey, among a few other contradictory excuses as to why the fees were so high as well as why the price that I had been told on the phone had flexibility no longer had any flexibility. After talking in circles about the fees, I mentioned that I was looking at a very comparable car at Kia of Riverdale not far away. That car was listed almost 1k cheaper and I explained that unless he could match or beat that better price, I would want to look at that vehicle before signing anything with him. He then disparaged that dealer, implying they were less trustworthy and that, as a Maserati dealership, they were inherently better. Once I said I would not close with the fees and that I wanted to do my due diligence at the other dealer, he then asked what price I would want and I named the maximum I would consider. He said he would try that price but asked to have my physical credit card to “show as a negotiating chip to his manager” while I did not have any price in writing. When I said I would not give my card over unless I had in writing a price I agreed with, wrote it in pen on the back of the previous offer and asked me to sign it. At that point I had to laugh and told him that I told him that we were leaving. As we left the tried to rush in to his managers office and try any last ditch effort to keep us from walking. Everything that gives car dealerships a bad name was on full display here. From hidden fees to the classic “let me check with my manager” between every sentence. Their tactic seems to be to tack on a as high a fee as they think they can get away with, if a customer does notice this fee, they will allow them to negotiate it away so that the buyer feels like they have won when in reality they simply have negotiated the trumped up price back to the starting price, not any lower. Luckily, I came in prepared and did not fall victim to what to a predatory dealer. After the bad experience I went to Kia of Riverdale not far away who had a very comparable car at a better price and gave it to me with no “recondition fee” and gave me the price I saw online despite this car actually having freshly changed oil and brake pads with a service record to prove it. Avoid Maserati of Bergen. More
