Well, that was easy Let's face it: Car dealers are viewed by some Americans right up there with lobbyists. But, unlike lobbyists, the car dealer/salesperson can make a po Let's face it: Car dealers are viewed by some Americans right up there with lobbyists. But, unlike lobbyists, the car dealer/salesperson can make a positive difference in an individual's life. And, that's the way I felt with Ralph at Portland Volvo. Here is the short story: First, always do your homework. I looked at top dealers in the area, with, of course, Volvo at the top of that list. I knew what I wanted, recognized and stuck to my budget, knew my time availability, and sought out the type of personality who would shepherd me through this process. To buy a car, you must know your values and your limitations. But, don't be an xxx. Be realistic, a quality necessary in any car purchase. I looked online at the PV inventory on a Friday. I wanted a pre-owned and so there was some limit to my search. I looked at it (without interference) on a Sunday. On Monday, I went in, saw Ralph sitting at his desk (For some reason unknown to me, I bypassed the others at their desks, even though I had no strategy) and approached him for preliminary information. He was more than happy, the auto-cheerleader that he is! I told him some of my financial expectations and he seemed amenable (I didn't want a car payment so was working on a unique financial situation with some money put on my credit card and the rest in cash). I told him I would call him later in the day. Of course, salespeople hear that all the time, I'm sure, but Ralph was gracious and gave me his card. I called him later, asked him to test drive it, and returned to PV. The car was great, even though it was a used vehicle. During the drive, Ralph gave me some pointers on the car and even its history. In the end, I ended up purchasing it. That was Monday. On Thursday, the car was ready--as was my payment. The entire journey lasted less than a week. No hassle. No distrust. Nothing but an other-centered sales guy who, it happened, had pictures on his desk of the same people I liked! Finally, Jason was more than accommodating. I rarely, if ever find financial people all that captivating (they work with numbers), but this guy was engaging. I found him to be as pressure-free as Ralph! Just an all-around good guy, without doubt. I have driven a Mercedes for years and years. I am now part of the Volvo family, appreciated the time and authenticity given to me, and feel 100 percent satisfied with the purchase (That's the FIRST time I've ever written that line, btw!).
