I went in for TPS light, they put air in the tires and reset the light. I told them i didn't think this was the issue. By the time I got home the light was on again. More
I have owned Toyota vehicles for more than 40 years, beginning with a 1981 Corolla. Over the years, my vehicles have also included a 1983 Toyota Cressida, a 1991 Corolla, a 1996 Corolla LE, a 1996 Camry beginning with a 1981 Corolla. Over the years, my vehicles have also included a 1983 Toyota Cressida, a 1991 Corolla, a 1996 Corolla LE, a 1996 Camry LE, a 1997 Camry SE, a 2017 Corolla LE, and now a 2024 Corolla SE. I know these vehicles well, have routinely driven them close to 300,000 miles, and have worked with several Toyota dealerships, including DARCARS, Koons, and now Preston Toyota following its acquisition of the Koons location. I have also personally performed a significant amount of maintenance on my older Toyotas. I continue using this dealership primarily because it is conveniently located near my home. However, I honestly dread taking my vehicles there for service because nearly every visit seems to include another aggressive or questionable upsell. That should not be the experience for a vehicle that is only two years old, has fewer than 45,000 miles, and is covered by a fully prepaid maintenance agreement. When I purchased my 2024 Corolla from Koons in Annapolis, Maryland, I also purchased a comprehensive warranty and prepaid maintenance plan covering the vehicle through 75,000 miles. At the time of purchase, I was specifically told that required fluid services and exchanges would be covered under the agreement. Since Preston took over the location, however, the dealership has appeared inconsistent and hesitant about honoring the coverage I was promised, while continuing to recommend many of those same services at an additional cost. During a recent visit at approximately 44,000 miles, the inspection report showed that the engine air filter and cabin air filter were the only items listed in the yellow “needs attention” category. Because these items should be covered under my prepaid maintenance plan, I called to ask whether they would be replaced. I was initially told they would only be replaced if I paid for them. After I pushed back, the representative checked the system and acknowledged that the filters were covered under the maintenance agreement, but stated that they could not be replaced under the plan until the vehicle reached 60,000 miles. In other words, the dealership identified the filters as needing attention at 44,000 miles but would only replace them immediately if I paid out of pocket. More concerning, the same inspection report showed all vehicle fluids in the green “good” category, yet I was still advised to purchase a brake-fluid exchange costing more than $200. It is difficult to understand why that service would be recommended immediately after the technician documented that the fluids were in good condition. It is equally concerning that Preston continues attempting to sell me fluid services that I was told were included when I purchased the maintenance agreement. I was also advised to purchase a four-wheel alignment and tire-balancing service for nearly $300. However, the same inspection report listed the tires in the green “good” category. The vehicle was not pulling, the steering wheel remained straight, and there were no signs of uneven tire wear, vibration, or other symptoms that would normally indicate a balancing or alignment problem. If the tires were inspected and documented as being in good condition, it is difficult to understand what inspection finding supported the recommendation for tire balancing. Additionally, with the original tires likely approaching replacement within the next 10,000 to 15,000 miles, the recommendation did not appear practical without a clearly documented alignment or balancing issue. I later obtained a second opinion from DARCARS Toyota and was advised that none of these recommended services were necessary at that time. I have also noticed inconsistencies in Preston’s recommendations regarding when certain services are supposedly required. For example, Preston recommended cleaning the MAP sensor, air intake, and throttle body on my 2017 Corolla at approximately 90,000 miles. However, similar se More
