The service was for a state inspection (no complaint) and to check a valve tap. The service writer said the valve tap noise was actually the catalytic converter. This is nonsense: the sound varied with rpm to check a valve tap. The service writer said the valve tap noise was actually the catalytic converter. This is nonsense: the sound varied with rpm, it was present after the engine was well warmed (so no more thermal expansion sounds from the converter), the noise is very evident near the valve covers and differs from side to side and is clearly an engine noise, not creaking from the catalytic converter. This is only the latest instance of Rafferty service providing wrong and misleading information. Previously, on the same vehicle, the check engine light blinked on. Rafferty service blamed it on electrical interference interference from the power lead to an aftermarket audio amplifier. The lead does not cross paths with the ECM nor any of its signal wiring, and carries dc current: not prone to causing interference. After 2 additional trips to correct misdiagnoses that resulted in the check engine light reappearing, they finally determined that the cause was faulty solenoids controlling the variable valve cams. Previous to that, on a prior Outback, they diagnosed a wheel bearing noise as possibly due to brake pads rubbing on a ridge on a rotor, and kept repeating that diagnosis, over several visits, until the noise on that wheel became bad enough that they could no longer avoid a bad bearing conclusion. Of course the time consumed with the wrong diagnoses delayed service beyond the warranty period (by 2000 miles). This most recent farce (I have not mentioned the service problems with a 3rd Subaru, from the past) is their 3rd strike: I will no longer use Rafferty for service nor, for that matter, any other Subaru dealer service as I have learned not to trust that service: the "love" should not include repeated trips to the dealer only to find the problem still present. The technicians have poor diagnostic skills or the dealer simply wishes to avoid "bothersome" work. In either case,there are many independent shops, and those I have used provide a much superior experience. More
