We purchased a used low mileage vehicle for my daughter & found one where the online listed price also included a cash price (TT&L). When we first looked at the car it was listed at $27+ with the cash price found one where the online listed price also included a cash price (TT&L). When we first looked at the car it was listed at $27+ with the cash price at around $29K, but wanted the keep looking. We looked up & saw that the car had been on the lot for 30+ days & decided to go back the following day to take another look & see if we could get a better deal, but the price had already been lowered to $25,919 with the pay cash price $27,597 (includes TT&L). I told the salesman that we wanted the car & that I would pay cash the next morning. That morning I asked if there was anything they could do to lower the price even more but was told that they had just lowered the price BUT he would be willing to fight to knock off a $799 charge for some “protectorant” that they add to all their used cars, & I said “great.” However, when I received the listing of all the costs, the final cost was $28,096! When I balked at this, I was shown that an additional $499 had been added for some tracker system & the sales person held up the key ring with a round white fob, which, he said was installed on all used vehicles & couldn't be removed. He didn’t explain what the tracker system was or why I would want it, but at that point I didn’t care because I had never been told about this added cost. A manager came & explained that this was something new, just a month or so, that they hadn’t updated the website system to include the cost in the online listing. They said that I didn’t have a choice to take it or not, the system was an installed component in the car & that was the cost. When I said I was ready to walk, the manager went back to talk with “someone” & came back to the salesman’s desk, without looking or acknowledging me at all, handed the salesman an updated price where the charge for the installed tracker system had been removed. Interestingly, the fob was NOT included with my keys when I picked up the car that afternoon. It got me thinking that the $799 “protectorant” that “had already been added to the car,” may not have actually been put on the car, but I’ll never know. The sales person explained that all dealerships add things to the cash price at the time of sale, which I don’t understand how that can be true. When my daughter & I picked up the car that afternoon the manager basically walked us outside, pointed to the car & handed me the keys, said have a nice day, then turned to go back inside. The sales people at Rockwall Ford are the nicest people in the world until you call their bluff, I guess, or maybe they were just really busy. So either the tracker system is on the car & I can’t use it, there never was a tracker system put on the car, or they took it off, despite the claim they made to me to the contrary. What really frustrates me is that the sales guy told me that “because he liked me; considers me a friend” he was willing to fight to have the $799 protectorant charge removed, when all along they were just trying to create the illusion that I was getting a deal so that I wouldn’t focus on the $499 tracker charge. After all, he’s “my friend,” right? The car is perfect for my daughter & runs great; it’s a practically new Subaru. However, while I would not recommend this dealership’s used car tactics, be sure to get an “all-in” cost BEFORE you agree to purchase the vehicle. We paid cash which means they couldn’t make money on financing & since they lowered the price to get it off their lot I suspect that the added $499 charge was their attempt to make something on the car. I suspect that if they hadn’t lowered the price to get it off their lot, those last minute added costs would not have been included, but I can only speculate. Regardless, BUYER BEWARE when purchasing a used car from Rockwall Ford! More
