The way you want car buying to be. The Mission: I needed/wanted to buy a fun used car and one that is not super common. I eventually settled on a 2009-2016 BMW Z4 sDrive35i. I wanted The Mission: I needed/wanted to buy a fun used car and one that is not super common. I eventually settled on a 2009-2016 BMW Z4 sDrive35i. I wanted one with relatively low miles, a clean CARFAX, one or two owners at most, in great condition, all recalls addressed, and the story of the car known by the seller. The Problem: I live in a smaller, out-of-the-way city where the used car selection is poor, and where those that are available usually come at a premium. I also travel a lot for work and don't have tons of time to fly or drive around and and look at cars in person. The Search: While looking for Z4s online, I only found a handful nationwide that met my preferred characteristics and one was a blue 2011 Z4 at Toy Barn. I sent emails to several of the sellers and received a few prompt replies, including from Matt Harbold at Toy Barn. I arranged to talk with Matt and knew right away this was going to be a good experience. Matt spent a lot of time describing the car, pointing out a few things including a couple of blemished areas not evident in the online photos. He went to the car and did a walk-around and texted me some closer, detailed photos of things I wanted to see as we talked. He also pointed out that the wheels all had varying amounts of "curb rash" which he hadn't seen and neither had I. Matt said right away that it was fixable and that he'd have his guys work on it right away. The Deal: After talking to several sellers about several cars, I decided to buy from Toy Barn. Matt expedited the process and paperwork (which Kelli in Finance expressed to me at 6pm and which I had in my hands at 10am the next day!). We agreed that Matt would ship the car as soon as the payment and paperwork were processed. However, I unexpectedly had to book an extended business trip which meant I'd probably have to wait several weeks to get the car. So I told Matt that I was going to hop on a plane to Dublin and drive the car home. Matt went to work and had the car ready and waiting for me. We chatted a bit, he showed me around the car, we shook hands, and I hit the road. The Verdict: Buying a car long distance is fraught with anxiety, so trust and candor are the keys. Matt was super professional, very easygoing and friendly, and comforting to work with. This is my 3rd car purchased remotely and, fortunately, all have turned out well. I will say, however, that none went smoother or gave me a better sense of ease than Toy Barn. Sorry for the lengthy review, but I think it's important to pass along all of the little things that made my purchase great so others know what to expect. I can't recommend Matt and Toy Barn highly enough. I would definitely buy from them again! More
