A Lovely, No-Pressure Car Shopping Experience My partner and I have had the range of car shopping experiences. We've had the uncomfortable, tedious "fish in a barrel" sitting at a table, waiting f My partner and I have had the range of car shopping experiences. We've had the uncomfortable, tedious "fish in a barrel" sitting at a table, waiting for the salesman to talk to his manager, "to see what he could do." And I got so frustrated and angry with being run around and lied to at another dealership that I actually walked out of the "negotiation," i.e. bullying, and Googled if a preyed-upon car buyer could purchase a flame-thrower within city limits. Everything changed today, working with Dusty at Toyota of Gladstone. Dusty is in his 30s, has a pleasant face and a charming manner. He is very human, actually, superhuman when contrasted with the typical car salesman that I have encountered. He knows his cars, shares information readily both during the test drive and discussing the vehicle afterward. As I mentioned, he is a human being, so when the the process occasionally slows, he is able to fill the time with very pleasant conversation and getting to know each other. Dusty is professional but affable, is non-threatening, and guided us through the car buying process efficiently and with charm. If I had room in my life for one more homie, I might ask Dusty out for a beer. I overheard somewhere through the process that the owner is female, and I suspect that our pleasant experience at Toyota of Gladstone might also be in part to a top-down customer service philosophy. In all of my previous car purchases, the paradigm seemed exclusively alpha male in nature, the essential tone from the salesman being, "We are going to have a transaction and I'm going to make certain that there is a winner and a loser at the end of it." That competitive, combative, manipulative element was entirely lacking. We were, and remain, astonished, and we can cross car buying off our list of atrocities that life periodically inflicts upon us fragile humans.
