My wife and I have been faithful customers of Toyota of Lancaster for years - both new vehicles and service and maintenance. Recently when my 2019 Tundra reached 150K mileage, I went in for my usual 5 Lancaster for years - both new vehicles and service and maintenance. Recently when my 2019 Tundra reached 150K mileage, I went in for my usual 5K oil change & tire rotation. The service dept rotated the tires but informed me that my "lug nuts were swollen" and would probably require replacement at the next tire rotation ($492.50 for twenty lug nuts). I had never heard of "swollen" lug nuts and, via a series of text messages, communicated my non-acceptance of that diagnosis with the Service Manager, who agreed that given we're great customers - to replace my lug nuts for free the next time that I came in if replacement actually was required. 5K miles later, I came in for another oil change & tire rotation. I waited in the customer lounge for approx. 1.5 hrs, and was then called by the Service Rep and told my truck was ready. The Service Rep then informed me that they did not perform the scheduled tire rotation since the lug nuts were "swollen". I asked her how my (or anyone's) lug nuts could become "swollen," and she replied, "... mileage, sun, heat, water, road wear-and-tear...". I replied that those "reasons" made no sense, but if my lug nuts had somehow become damaged, given that Toyota of Lancaster’s Service Dept is the only service dept that works on my truck, they must have caused the damage. The Rep became insulted, refused to accept my assessment, and stated that Toyota of Lancaster was not responsible for the "swollen" lug nuts. I also stated that she (and Toyota of Lancaster) were now wasting my time since they did not rotate my tires and that, as a result, I would have to return on a different day to get that done. I then called the Service Manager (she was off for the day) and left a voicemail to call me back to discuss - which she never did. I then did some online research on "swollen lug nuts" and found out that Toyota has problems with what they referred to as "swollen lug nuts". Said problems, however, are not due to the lug nuts becoming "swollen" over time but instead are due to Toyota having manufactured the truck using cheap OEM two-part lug nuts consisting of a small, inexpensive "core" to which Toyota attaches a cheap, cool-looking, solid-appearing, sheet-metal "shell" - so while it looks like you have cool looking rims with heavy-duty lug nuts, what you really have are small, inexpensive core lug nuts with solid-appearing, albeit insubstantial, thin sheet-metal "shells". The "shells" cannot withstand the repeated on/off hammering by the impact wrenches used by Toyota's Service Dept (at 150K miles, my cheap, OEM lug nuts had been successively "hammered out of shape" on/off between 50-60 times), and eventually become deformed (not "swollen") by the repeated use of impact wrenches. Instead of having Toyota of Lancaster's Service Dept replace my "swollen" lug nuts at the absurd cost of $492.50, I went online and purchased a complete set of solid, one-piece lug nuts from SFX Performance for $120. I also purchased a set of "flip-sockets" ($49 plus tax from Amazon for a five-piece set of up/down sockets) to enable me to properly fit/remove the "hammered out of shape/deformed" OEM lug nuts and then replace them with quality, solid, one-piece lug nuts. If Toyota had used quality, solid, one-piece lugs when manufacturing my Tundra, I would not have had to spend a single dime on replacing lug nuts for my truck's expected life (400-500K miles). So, first, Toyota used cheap two-piece lug nuts when they built the vehicle then Toyota of Lancaster attempted to rip off the customer (me and everyone else who gets diagnosed with "swollen lug nuts") into spending $492.50 to remove the junk, OEM "hammered/deformed" lug nuts and replace them with another set of junk two-piece nice, OEM lug nuts. That's just bad service and bad business, any way you look at it. More
