Buyer beware. I was presented with a finance deal that included a $4,606.56 VSI fee along with several other add-ons that significantly increased my monthly pay I was presented with a finance deal that included a $4,606.56 VSI fee along with several other add-ons that significantly increased my monthly payment. When I questioned these charges and asked the dealership to show me proof that these fees were actually required by the lender, I was politely asked to wait in the lobby while they tried to get the fees “waived.” About 20 minutes later, I was told the VSI fee had been completely waived. That immediately raised red flags for me. If the fee was truly required by the lender, how could it suddenly disappear in less than half an hour? It made me question whether these charges were ever necessary in the first place. After that, I was told the bank had supposedly changed its mind about my loan and that the dealership would contact the lender the following day to see what could be done. Something about the entire situation didn’t sit right with me, so I decided to contact the lender myself to verify the information I had been given. To my surprise, the lender told me that I had not been denied, they were simply waiting for the dealership to move forward with the transaction, and there was no lender-required VSI fee for my loan. The dealership then gave me multiple different explanations for why the deal couldn’t move forward. First it was one reason, then it was another. When I asked for documentation supporting those explanations, they were unable to provide any. Based on my experience, I was left feeling like I was being pressured into accepting thousands of dollars in unnecessary fees and add-ons. Had I not contacted the lender myself, I would have had no way of knowing the information I was being given didn’t match what the lender told me. My advice: Verify everything directly with your lender before signing anything. Question every fee, every add-on, and don’t assume that what you’re being told reflects the lender’s actual requirements. I’m very glad I made that phone call! More
